Annie’s Bakery and Cafe – Calgary, Alberta

We quite enjoy wandering through Fish Creek Park in Calgary. There’s always things to see around! We’ve always walked by Annie’s Bakery and never got a chance to go in. This one time, we made an effort to come here during their opening season, and we’re glad we did!

Although everyone seems to eat ice cream, we were more into baked goods. I ordered their Cinnamon Rolls which looked really good. I’m not sure if it was just out in the air without being covered too long or what it was, but it didn’t seem that great! It was a little dry and hard. The taste of it was amazing, but it was more of the texture. Not bread like, or the soft ooey-gooey.

We also got an Apple Strudel as we just got back from Eastern Europe at this time so a cup of coffee and baked good was on the top of our minds. The apple strudel was really good!

The coffee we got with this was their latte which to my excitement, they made it in front of you and made it taste amazing!

Overall experience, it was fun! the place was small, so be prepared for a picnic when you come here.

Café Mondo – Jasper, Alberta

We saw a great deal to stay in Jasper, so we didn’t pass it down. In the morning, we wanted a quick brunch which meant it wasn’t too busy. We walked right into Cafe Mondo and it is right on Patricia Street with street parking nearby.

My husband loves soup and we went for a late enough breakfast that they had soup! Their soup of the day was a Beef Vegetable Soup and it was really amazing hearty soup.

I ordered their Breafast Wrap and it wasn’t bad. It was a wrap with egg, tomatoes, onion and cheese with smoked salmon. This wrap is like a smoked salmon pizza on a pita bread! It tasted amazing and they were very generous with the smoked salmon.

My husband ordered their Croissant Toastie which is a ham and cheese sandwich in a croissant. It is an amazing little breakfast that is delicious! The croissant was really fresh, with a nice light and crispy exterior and a soft and buttery interior.

Overall, the brunch was delicious and it smells amazing! The food came out quick and the service was friendly! This was the perfect last stop before heading home!

Dutch Bakery and Diner – Victoria, British Columbia

We got up really early the morning we were driving home and found a place called Dutch Bakery and Diner which wasn’t too far from our hotel. We decided to try them, and it worked out great as street parking was free still when we went!

We sat down and we were greeted by the friendliest staff, and it felt like you were in an old town diner once you got there. It was fantastic!! The menu wasn’t extensive, but the selection was still great!

I decided I would have their Uitsmyter which sounded “Dutch” to me, and I tried to get it as traditional as possible. Turns out, I ordered a giant silly face – ham and egg open faced sandwich with some hashbrowns! It tasted great and it was fun to eat the entire face up!

We also ordered something more standard to our culture, their Full Breakfast which was either ham or bacon, and in our case it was bacon, with eggs, hashbrowns and toast! Just because it sounds simple though, that’s where it’s important to have a good recipe and skills making it and they did an excellent job here!

Our breakfast was so amazing, we decided to grab a few treats for our ferry back to the mainland!! The bakery was a lot of fun, like any bakery really, but this one had so much stuff! I got a Chocolate Croissant to go and I actually ate it at the ferry terminal. It didn’t make it on board as it looked and smelled so amazing! It was delicious and the chocolate they used was decadent, but not so rich where I don’t like it! The texture was pretty good too, and I’m sure it would have been better had I enjoyed it at the diner.

We got another croissant as well, a savoury one, their Ham and Cheese Croissant and we got this as it was unique. Instead of plain or cheese, it had ham in it. It was actually amazing and as I’m writing about it now, I kind of wish I had one! The texture of this croissant was better actually, and with the ham and cheese, it was perfection! It doesn’t look like much, but she’s a gooder!

The final thing we bought on our way out was what they called a Flying Saucer Cookie and I got it because of the name. I took a bite of this and I fell in love! There’s nothing called “Flying Saucer” on the internet as I wanted to know more about it or prehaps try to make it. It’s got almond on it and a little filling. It was absolutely amazing, unique, and special! I really enjoyed it! So, be sure to stop by here for some flying saucers!!

Overall, this was one of the best and unique bakeries I’ve been to as it’s a bakery and diner mix! The food and service was amazing, the prices was fair as I found everything in Victoria just a tad more expensive. But the memories of the food we had here and the experience of flying saucers, it was worth it!

Roof Restaurant and Bar: Afternoon Tea – Vancouver, British Columbia

We really enjoy having Afternoon Tea as it’s a really special treat. Our favourite is enjoying them at Fairmont hotels, and this time we made an appointment at Roof Restaurant at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and the location is in downtown Vancouver.

It was actually just a walk-in reservation, but they were still able to seat us near the window in their dining room. The hotel was going through some renovations and sadly they have gotten rid of their gift shop. Otherwise, the hotel was beautiful! I now see if you go for afternoon tea now, it’s in a different restaurant at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, hosted at Notch8 – so I must try there next time!

Once we got seated, we got the tea selection menu and picked some our tea. Shortly after, they came out with Yogurt Panna Cotta with Macerated Fruits which was amazing. The Panna cotta was smooth, thick and creamy. It was then topped with the macerated fruits in alcohol, which wasn’t over powering! It was quite a wonderful start!

After we had the Panna Cotta, they brought out a plate of Asparagus Tartlett and Sausage Roll! The pastry was light and flaky and the filling was quite satisfying! We both really enjoy sausage rolls, so when they had some fresh ones, it was amazing!

Then, a beautiful 3 tier tray of goodies came and it was very elaborate! The top tier had some scones with some jellies and Devonshire cream, then the middle tier had wonderful desserts, and the bottom tier had some finger sandwiches. The food was amazing and the scene was breath-taking as well!

Our overall experience here was pretty good! The food was good, and the tea, service and atmosphere was pretty wonderful! The price of the afternoon tea was pretty average for the Fairmont hotels at about $50 per person.

Hilltop Diner – Langley, British Columbia

On our drive to Vancouver, we’ve heard amazing stories and reviews about Hilltop Diner and also watched Food Networks You Gotta Eat Here come by this location – so we HAD to make a stop and visit this lovely establishment!

Once we got a seat after a long wait as they’re very popular (and well worth the wait), we got our menus. After we ordered, I think the waitresses realized I was taking pictures of everything and shared their scrapbook with us. This amazing scrapbook is filled with memorabilia of films/movies and shows that used this restaurant! If you’re interested, I’d recommend asking to see it! Shortly after we started flipping through this scrapbook, our order of the soup of the day came, which was Turkey Dumpling soup. This soup was really amazing and I’ve actually have had nothing like it before!

I ordered their Classic Burger which I figured if it’s “classic”, it’s probably pretty awesome and popular! This amazing burger had a 5oz patty with fried onions and the classic toppings of lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. The thing that really stood out was the sauce they used on the burger, it was very tasty!

My husband ordered their Mushroom Mozza Burger which was another super delectable burger! This burger had a 5oz patty with mushrooms under melted mozza cheese, and also topped with their classic toppings of lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Instead of fries, we got onion rings with this burger, and I love onion rings, and they did a good batter and fry here!

You would think after eating burgers the size of our heads, we would be so stuffed and call it a day. However, this diner is known for their homemade pies, so there was no way I was going to leave without getting a slice. We ordered a rustic pie, which not many people know about, it’s the Flapper Pie and secretly it’s a pie I hope becomes as popular as Apple Pies! This pie had the perfect graham crust with a perfectly creamy custard filling – just the way it’s suppose to be (not with jello custard)!

Overall, this place was amazing! If it wasn’t so far out of the way, I wish I could visit here more often and try other selections on their menu!
