Windsor Lounge – Waterton, Alberta

During our stay at the Prince of Wales hotel, we ate dinner in our hotel. Although we wanted to eat in their main dining room, we never made reservations and it was busy as it was their last week opened there – so we ended up finding a table at the Windsor Lounge where we got a wonderful window seat and enjoyed the sunset.

I ordered their Grilled Bangers and Mash but because it was pretty much their closing day, they had no more bangers so they gave me amazing bison meatballs instead of grilled bison sausage. The meatballs and mash potatoes were amazing, the flavour of the glaze/sauce was a mustard sauce which was amazing with the bison!

My husband ordered their Shepard’s Pie which was made of ground lamb and beef stew topped with mashed potatoes and then baked. It really was amazing as it sounds as well as the lamb was really tastefully prepared.

We shared our table with a German couple which was a neat highlight of our experience as we shared stories of traveling and history – it was neat. Together, we enjoyed the magnificent sunset which I had to capture – and now share!

After everything was all said and done, we really wanted to enjoy some dessert while the German couple enjoyed another beer! We had the Saskatoon Berry Strudel which was Saskatoon berries in a flaky pastry dough. It was pretty amazing although you can’t see the berry mixture in the picture.

Overall, an amazing dining experience. We had a fantastic time. The food was delicious, the prices were reasonable, and the service was great! But, the view and the experience was truly once in a lifetime!

Wieners of Waterton – Waterton, Alberta

During our first visit to Waterton, Alberta we drove by Wieners of Waterton and we knew if we were to come back, this would be a place we go eat at. So, we stopped in for a small snack to share as we already had some dinner plans. This was a small and busy little joint, but the food is worth the wait!

We ordered Jalapeno Cheddar Wiener with gingered carrots and pickled onions. As strange as that sounds, it was actually quite tasty! I even deicded I would start making some gingered carrots to put on my sandwiches as a condiment!

While we were here, we had an order of Fried Pickles which was really nicely fried and the texture was amazing! Salty, dilly, with a nice crisp – and a nice batter that they use to fry the pickles! We got it with a side of Peppercorn Ranch sauce but we didn’t need anything as it was awesome alone!

We really saw why this place is a local favourite. The food was fresh and amazing – we saw them take buns out of the oven, so we know everything is made in house! The bun was amazing as it held up to the wiener without falling apart with condiments. Flavours were great, and it wasn’t priced badly either! A great snack stop for sure!

Tacos La Mexicana – Edmonton, Alberta

We originally wanted to eat something else along Whyte Ave, and it was full – so we wandered around for a little while when we walked into Tacos La Mexicana. On the wall, there’s a board of all the “compliments” they get. So, it was quite promising. The restaurant is very little and it doesn’t have AC. It was quite stuffy for a hot summer day.

We were quite excited to be here as last time we randomly walked into a taco place it was very delightful. We ordered a burrito each and I got the mixed fajita burrito where they didn’t actually ask which kind of protein I wanted, so they gave beef. The burrito was warm in the inside and the beef was quite tough making it a little tough to eat. The burrito was stuffed with some onions, peppers, rice and of course beef.

My husband ordered their Chili Cheese Burrito with beef and it was decent. It was really hot and heated through – as it should be so the cheese was melted. The ground beef was really ground up it was almost like a paste. It wasn’t too bad at all, but it was loaded with onions and cabbage which seemed a little weird.

Overall, it’s probably a good place to go if you’re just not wanting to wait in line anywhere else. Otherwise, the burritos were average.

Moxie’s Grill & Bar – Fort McMurray, Alberta

We went up to Fort McMurray for the oil sands tour and after the day of touring, we needed to eat! We drove around and found Moxie’s Grill & Bar which is normally a place where I don’t go as I don’t usually have a good experience for some reason or another.

I’m still in search of delicious Dry Ribs and really felt that they would do a good job with the pork ribs. The ribs were very well fried and quite delicious, but they really over seasoned with salt and pepper. I found myself shaking off the extra salt and pepper – but after we do that, it was awesome!

I decided to order Salmon Banh Mi Sandwich for some odd reason. I was really lucky as the fish wasn’t “fishy” and it tasted alright. The sandwich overall was a little bland, which was probably because my tastebuds were overwhelmed from the dry ribs, but it was good! My only complaint would be the sauce that came with the sandwich was really watered down. I also ordered gravy with the fries and it cost $1.00 for a tiny container (yup, you can’t see it, but it’s the condiment dish). To make it worse, it was runny and tasteless! They must have over diluted it, so I was not a happy camper.

Luckily, this dinner was for my husband’s birthday and his dish was good. He ordered Herb Chicken Alfredo which actually would be really sad if they messed up on it. He enjoyed it with fresh cracked pepper. It was creamy and decadent.

Overall, our experience wasn’t awful, but it definitely could have been better. There was nothing really “wrong” with our experience, just little things that seemed important to me that wasn’t satisfied.

Thirsty Bear Saloon – Waterton, Alberta

We recently took a road trip and made it to Waterton where we called it a night. We weren’t too hungry but we figured we should go grab something to eat regardless, so we figured we’d go to their local place and grab some wings. We walked into Thirsty Bear Saloon outside the Bayshore Inn hotel.

Once we were inside, we were the only table, but apparently we were their first guests for the season! They just opened for the May long weekend, and it was pretty neat! It definitely looked like it was the place to go for both tourists and locals at the end of the night!

We just ordered our drinks and some Chicken Wings and we had them in Honey Garlic flavour which was very tasty! The wings were really good and quite unique as we were expecting a saucy wing but it wasn’t! We really enjoyed them dry and flavourful with some dipping sauce on the side.

We really enjoyed our experience here and we haven’t stopped talking about returning to the Waterton area soon again!
