Kane’s Harley Diner – Calgary, Alberta

We got up really early this one morning to play a little prank on a friend. Afterwards, it was still really early and we were getting hungry, so we went to Inglewood, and went into Kane’s Harley Davidson Diner which is right on 9th Ave SE. It’s an old school looking diner from the outside, and there’s some street parking, especially if you go early.

Looking around the restaurant, it was pretty neatly decorated and I love the retro style of the place! Although bikes aren’t “my thing”, this was still an exciting place to go! They had other sorts of antiques around which made it fun for me!

I was quite hungry as mentioned, we got up early. I decided to go for their Biker Bowl which was a giant portion of hash browns topped with 2 eggs, ham, tomato, green onions, cheese and hollandaise sauce. To make the meal even bigger, it even came with toast! At first sight, it didn’t look like much, but as you keep digging into this bowl, you really notice how full you’ve become! It tasted really good and the hash browns were excellent, until the last one!

My husband ordered their Classic Fueler which was another large breakfast that consisted of 6oz of Alberta sirloin steak and 2 eggs, over hash browns. This “steak and egg” breakfast also comes with toast! The steak was well seasoned and cooked well! It was tender and flavourful, so it was perfect in our books.

Overall, the dining experience was quite a unique one! They really thought out the details from naming the dishes, to decorating the diner. The prices, that was awesome for the amount of food you get! We left here with a really full belly and we were really satisfied.

Home Restaurant – Salmon Arm, British Columbia

We were traveling home from Vancouver this one day and we figured we should stop halfway and grab some lunch. We stopped in Salmon Arm and basically drove to whatever was opened as it was a late Sunday afternoon. We stumbled into Home Restaurant which turns out to be a small chain in BC!

Once we sat down as there was a little bit of wait, they told us the soup of the day was their Seafood Chowder and coming from a place where I had lots of seafood, it was what I wanted! I ordered a bowl of their seafood chowder and although it wasn’t the heartiest, it was really filling and it hit the spot. I really enjoyed the flavours and texture of this chowder.

For the actual meal, I couldn’t get my mind away from having their Fish and Chips and this amazing classic specialty comes with 2 pieces of their fried fish with a mountain of fries and coleslaw! You really get a large meal for the small price! It was amazing as the fish was fresh and fried to perfection! Tender and juicy fish with a really light and crispy coating!

The last thing we ordered really didn’t go with my “seafood” theme, but it’s alright – it was pretty awesome anyway! We had their Schnitzel Champignon which was pork schnitzel with mushrooms and it is one of my husbands all time favorite schnitzel! This mushroom topping was made from fresh mushrooms and a gravy on top, with a side of mashed potatoes and more gravy! It was really amazing and the gravy made the vegetables seem extra amazing!

Overall, we left here feeling so full and satisfied we felt like that was the perfect meal to end our road trip! Sometimes just randomly stopping into places you find hidden gems and we lucked out here!

Travelodge Hotel Vancouver Airport – Richmond, British Columbia

We got to stay at the Travelodge Hotel Vancouver which is right by the airport of Richmond, and it’s pretty strange of a location as it seems like the highway exits to this hotel from one side only – or we haven’t figured it out. Either way, the hotel is in a conveniently location as it’s near one of their main traffic arteries and near the airport.

We booked a 1-night stay here in their 1 King Size Bed Room and the room was quite nice! It was a corner unit/room that looks the front of the hotel so it wasn’t noisy or anything. The room was a little run down, but there’s tons of space and the hotel and room was really clean.

The bathroom offered their standard hotel amenities and if you needed more, you can always ask their front desk for some amenities if you forgot any during your stay. The interesting thing about this room was the coffee maker was actually in the bathroom – which is only strange as there’s a lot of room in the actual room! But I’m thinking they were short on outlets, or they’re trying to make it easier as you get water from the bathroom tap!

Our overall stay was very enjoyable! It was quick, but it was nice and comfortable. The bed wasn’t as bad as it looks and the parking turned out to be complimentary! So, it was a great place to crash for a great rate!

Dutch Bakery and Diner – Victoria, British Columbia

We got up really early the morning we were driving home and found a place called Dutch Bakery and Diner which wasn’t too far from our hotel. We decided to try them, and it worked out great as street parking was free still when we went!

We sat down and we were greeted by the friendliest staff, and it felt like you were in an old town diner once you got there. It was fantastic!! The menu wasn’t extensive, but the selection was still great!

I decided I would have their Uitsmyter which sounded “Dutch” to me, and I tried to get it as traditional as possible. Turns out, I ordered a giant silly face – ham and egg open faced sandwich with some hashbrowns! It tasted great and it was fun to eat the entire face up!

We also ordered something more standard to our culture, their Full Breakfast which was either ham or bacon, and in our case it was bacon, with eggs, hashbrowns and toast! Just because it sounds simple though, that’s where it’s important to have a good recipe and skills making it and they did an excellent job here!

Our breakfast was so amazing, we decided to grab a few treats for our ferry back to the mainland!! The bakery was a lot of fun, like any bakery really, but this one had so much stuff! I got a Chocolate Croissant to go and I actually ate it at the ferry terminal. It didn’t make it on board as it looked and smelled so amazing! It was delicious and the chocolate they used was decadent, but not so rich where I don’t like it! The texture was pretty good too, and I’m sure it would have been better had I enjoyed it at the diner.

We got another croissant as well, a savoury one, their Ham and Cheese Croissant and we got this as it was unique. Instead of plain or cheese, it had ham in it. It was actually amazing and as I’m writing about it now, I kind of wish I had one! The texture of this croissant was better actually, and with the ham and cheese, it was perfection! It doesn’t look like much, but she’s a gooder!

The final thing we bought on our way out was what they called a Flying Saucer Cookie and I got it because of the name. I took a bite of this and I fell in love! There’s nothing called “Flying Saucer” on the internet as I wanted to know more about it or prehaps try to make it. It’s got almond on it and a little filling. It was absolutely amazing, unique, and special! I really enjoyed it! So, be sure to stop by here for some flying saucers!!

Overall, this was one of the best and unique bakeries I’ve been to as it’s a bakery and diner mix! The food and service was amazing, the prices was fair as I found everything in Victoria just a tad more expensive. But the memories of the food we had here and the experience of flying saucers, it was worth it!

Barbs Fish and Chips – Victoria, British Columbia

While we were in Victoria, we decided to go find their wharf as often on weekends, I tell my husband “I want to go to the wharf to eat”, but sadly there’s none in Calgary. I liked out here when I said that as we found ourselves at their wharf with floating restaurants and we randomly went to one and picked Barb’s Floating Seafood Restaurant which must be known for their Fish and Chips as everyone was getting some!

This was only a little snack, after a large lunch, we didn’t actually need to eat, but figured it was something we should experience. So, we ordered their 1 Piece Halibut Dinner and their side order of Seafood Chowder. They make everything to order and even when your buzzer goes off, they’re still preparing your meal at the window! The food was amazing, the fish was a large piece, seasoned, and fried to the most perfect piece of fried halibut I’ve had! The portions were huge and we haven’t had such fresh seafood in a long time!

The soup was full of seafood with some potatoes and was very tasty! There was a lot of seafood in the chowder without a lot of filler or potatoes. The overall meal here was amazing and we’ve been bragging about our experience here in Victoria. We’re glad we made this fish and chip stop even though we didn’t actually need to eat!
