Our Town Cafe – Vancouver, British Columbia

We all know I love road trips and with Covid-19 I’m unable to even leave the province, so I figured I’ll take a little trip by going this route! For my coffee series, I found the perfect “O” and I knew it was at Our Town Cafe in Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s a beautiful lake front cafe that’s stylish and comfortable. There’s street parking along a park and it’s a perfect location for a cafe!

I ordered a quick treat with a latte and it was magnificent! The space was clean and contemporary where it was very organized. I was very satisfied with the space, coffee and baked good! I had their chocolate loaf which was very moist and delicious!

Overall experience here was magnificent. If I wore a sweater, I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed sitting on the patio, but it was breezy. So, I just watched the crowd come in and out from inside.

Pie Junkie – Calgary, Alberta

I like pies, and I had a family in town for a month and I decided to try to get pies to make… but that never happened!! So, on Pie Day I wanted pie and found myself on a drive to the other end of the city to get some pie at Pie Junkie to bring back home, heat up and eat!

When we got there, there was a lineup and it was great to see!! I love supporting local businesses and this is one I’m happy to support. I got myself a Aussie Beef Pie and I wasn’t sure what it was. It’s a great pie with a flaky buttery crust filled with ground beef and then there was some gravy/sauce that spilled out in the centre!! It was amazing and it kind of reminded me of sheppards pie filling.

We also got their Butter Chicken Pie and it was quite tasty. It wasn’t really a butter chicken taste, but it was a delicious chicken filling with a bit of heat! The crust was also flaky and buttery and it’s almost like the Jamaican pie crust!

Then just as we’re paying, I needed a sweet pie. Everyone knows I have a sweet tooth and I got their Coconut Cream Pie which was absolutely beautiful!! The cream was light and fluffy, and great coconut taste!

Overall the pies were stuffed to the brim and was packed full of flavours! To reheat was simple as it said heat up in a cold oven 250F until you see a puddle of butter in the bottom. It was perfectly heated up and these pies are the best I’ve ever had!

Captains Boil – Calgary, Alberta

We made it to the Captains Boil randomly as we were doing a picture project and the theme was “trash” and I thought it would be a brilliant idea to take a picture of the trash from shelled food! So, we made it here one sunny afternoon and it was a great time. There wasn’t too much street parking but we did manage to find something obviously!

I ordered their lunch special and I picked my feast with fish and captains boil sauce and this came on a sizzling plate which also had a small assortment of seafood which was 2 crawfish, 2 shrimp, 2 mussels and 2 clams.

And, of course the main feature of the lunch was a bag of goodness and this one we picked the Dungenese crab in the captains boil sauce. It came with a bib and some plastic gloves for us to make a mess with. We dumped out the bag onto the table and to start the feast. It was amazing, the crab meat was sweet and the sauce was delicious!

Overall, we had a great time here and we would do it again! I think it’s more fun with more people as the selection would be massive and the mess will also grow!

Devil’s Table – Canmore, Alberta

This was a special place as I lost a co-worker from the Caribbean, and Devil’s Table in Canmore has their head chef that grew up on the same island as my coworker. It’s not the same town but same region so it was my little tribute and I needed to eat here for myself. This restaurant is inside a hotel which was really cozy and comfortable. We parked on the streets in the residential area, and walked over and it wasn’t a big deal.

I ordered their Shark bait which was Coconut Fennel Curry over red snapper and some shrimp, and it comes with grilled Focaccia to soak up all the sauce. The red snapper was absolutely delightful and definitely the star of the show. The coconut curry was really light, and it wasn’t overpowering at all!

We also ordered Buckaneer which Char Grilled Elk Burger, Boar Bacon, Smoked Cheddar, topped with a rum and pineapple ketchup and corn relish on a bun. This wasn’t a burger but a meat loaf really and it didn’t have a game flavour at all and with the balance of the sweet condiments it was perfect and refreshing!

We enjoyed the dinner so much that we even had dessert! They called it pudding on my receipt but it was a creme brulee! It was a custardy creme brulee and we enjoyed it thoroughly!

I really enjoyed my experience here and it’s not a place I would ever forget! The food, the service and the atmosphere was extremely amazing and it was a brilliant new cuisine type for this region!

Bookers BBQ & Crab Shack – Calgary, Alberta

I’ve been meaning to try Bookers for years! And, I mean years! I finally found a reason to go and it was for Valentines Day which seems a bit strange but it’s like a neat “holiday” dinner. There wasn’t a lot of parking in front of Bookers, but it wasn’t bad to find some within walking distance.

We decided to have their Valentines Special which was half of their BBQ Platter with some modifications. So, it came with half rack of Pork Ribs, Smokehouse Brisket, Smoked turkey breasts, with some sausages, baked beans and coleslaw. My favourite from the platter was the pork ribs which was fall off the bone tender and grilled to perfection.

With this special, it had a their Bucket of Crab which is a bucket of 2 clusters of snow crab with lemon and butter. The 2 cluster of snow crabs was so fresh and the shell was hard and crunchy. The melted butter was fantastic but it wasn’t necessary as the crab was amazing alone.

The entire experience was fantastic. The food was delicious, the environment was magnificent, and the service was top-notch!
