The Block Kitchen and Lounge – Calgary, Alberta

I decided to go backwards, instead of my usual as it’s more “interesting” to me. Work has really been an intersting period in 2020 so I’ve been pigging out a big from Christmas, to New Years and of course Chinese New Years. So, pigging out at lunch, we went to Mount Pleasant and found ourselves at The Block. This parking lot was filled with fancy cars so it was a bit intimidating as I was wondering if I could afford this place!

We got in and a hot drink was what I was going for. I ordered one of their special drinks and it’s really pretty!! The marshmallows were hard, but softened in the hot chocolate. It never melted and disintegrated so it was a fun treat to poke my fingers in the mug and slurp it. Yes, I’m aware I’m not fancy enough for a place like this and my grace is the reason why my bosses can’t take me out of the office.

I was starving to be honest, and I just wanted to eat everything. I ended up ordering their Roast Beef Dip and it was really good. Although the au jus was lacking in flavour, we really didn’t need it as the roast beef was so flavourful. It was a bit on the drier side without the au jus but it was perfectly fine. The fried onion really added a level of taste and texture that I truly enjoyed.

We also ordered a plate of Spaghetti and Meatballs and their portion sizes were huge!! There were a lot of meatballs on the plate with lots of flavour in their sauce and the meatballs. It was really an excellent dish especially from a lounge!

I really enjoyed my time here and the waitress was very pleasant. Her memory was amazing and everything about her elevated my experience here. She really made my morning and I’m happy. The lounge side was spacious with lots of seats. They have a restaurant side as well, which I didn’t even bother to poke my head there. I think I need to venture to this area more actually!

Whistle Stop – High River, Alberta

Nothing excites me more than small town cafes and diners and when I heard of Whistle Stop Diner as a little train dining cart restaurant, I knew I needed to make it a first stop! This adorable dining cart was so much fun, and the staff and food was phenomenal!

I found on their special menu their Cinnamon Bun Pancake which I knew I needed to have the moment I read it on the board. It was exceptional as it’s one of the things I love most. It was a very amazing treat.

I also like a great steak so we ordered a Steak and Egg special and there’s something so fun about steak and eggs. There’s absolutely nothing wrong steak and eggs, especially from Whistle Stop diner!

This was a fabulous dining experience, the food was fantastic, the experience was like nothing we’ve tried so far!

Misato Sushi & Grill – Calgary, Alberta

We had a delightful little sushi lunch at a place not far from my place, called Misato and this little place is truly little! There’s ample of parking, and the owners were very friendly!

We ordered a little sushi boat which had an assortment of sushi. The selection was delicious and the sushi was fresh.

They had a fun lunch special with a Bento Box and that was filled with a fun selection of a typical assortment. I has a bento box with teriyaki chicken, sashimi and tempura!

With the bento box, it came with a little bowl of miso soup

Overall, it’s a great little spot to go for lunch. It’s quiet and the food’s good! It’s a decent place!

Noodle Exchange – Las Vegas, Nevada

This is now the most random Las Vegas trip. Our main purpose of the 3 days here was for their airshow as I love airplanes and airshows. Our friends thought it would be fun to be as Asian as possible so Noodle Exchange was definitely not on my radar to go try, we did anyway! This little place was inside the Gold Coast Hotel that’s off the strip. We had rented a car so we were able to get around but I hear there’s buses that go here.

As we were Chinese’ing it up (I know!!) a home meal you’d rarely find in restaurants really interested me. I don’t know why a lot of our dishes sounds terrible translated, but they seriously taste fine!! This one is Minced Beef on Rice which is a very simple dish not even worth the price but it’s easy to eat!

The other dish we had is a noodle dish, and we had their Beef Shank Noodle Soup that was braised beef shank that was full of flavour and it was tender. It had some spice to it and it was delicious.

As I’m here reflecting a bit on the trip, it was quite a different one. It’s really nice that food brings people together and we get to make new memories while sharing past ones. Some friends are meant to keep and some are meant to suddenly exit without much said.

Meet Fresh – Las Vegas, Nevada

We recently went to Las Vegas and I traveled with some friends who enjoys Asian desserts so we found ourselves at Meet Fresh at Las Vegas’s Chinatown. I promise to edit the picture one day so you can see it better as well! This location is in a strip plaza so there’s ample parking and the space here is pretty big for a dessert place!

We ordered 2 desserts and shared them between the 4 of us. It sounds absolutely strange, but we had their Icy Taro Ball which was actually really good! It’s a bowl of shaved ice with Taiwanese boba and mochi like “balls” in both taro and yam flavour. It was actually tasty and I don’t know how to make it sound good. It’s not sweet of a dessert like a lot of our Chinese desserts, but it definitely hit the spot

The other dessert we ordered was a their Tofu Dessert which is something I can make but it’s always nice to have a hot smooth gingery dessert to eat!!

This was a great place to visit. The subtle sweet and a big of dessert is always welcome especially with great company! Although this is a chain internationally, it’s still a great place to go!
