Afternoon Tea: The Fairmont Empress Hotel – Victoria, British Columbia

We’ve been talking about having afternoon tea at all the Fairmont Hotels and when we got to stay at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, we tried to join them for afternoon tea without a reservation as we had no idea what time the ferry would bring us in at. We were really luck and got a spot, and it was a nice spot near the window too!

Once we were seated, we were brought the tea that we choose from a waitress that made this experience very memorable. She was absolutely amazing and we even wrote her a recognition card! But in conjunction with our tea arriving to the table, we were brought Fresh Strawberries with Empress Cream, which was really refreshing! We were pleasantly surprised as we didn’t think strawberries were in season just quite yet!

Right after we got our fresh berries, we got a beautiful 3 tier tray of food which was all amazing! We rank our Fairmont afternoon experiences and this was a really close runner up to the best! The food was amazing, the service was top-notch, and the atmosphere was breathtaking!

This amazing presentation had their sandwiches on the bottom tier, scones with empress cream and jelly on the second tier and topped with their dessert tray! I really enjoyed their delicate desserts and freshly made sandwiches. The scones were quite spectacular, but I think I enjoyed the empress cream the most!

So next time you’re in the area, be sure to talk through these doors and enjoy a wonderful and memorable experience of afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Empress! It’s definitely here to impress!

Super 8 – Salmon Arm, British Columbia

During one of our driving trips to British Columbia, we wanted a quick sleep, so we stopped at Super 8 at Salmon Arm which is just off of the highway in a convenient location. Although the hotel is just off the highway and a railway going behind it, it wasn’t as noisy as expected.

The room we stayed at was their 2 Double Bed Room and it wasn’t the most spacious room, but it did it’s job. It offered 2 double beds, a mini fridge, a desk, coffee maker and hair dryer! This hotel even comes with breakfast that starts at 6am!

The amount of space was a little crammed as you can see in the pictures – the fridge is right under the closet area, and that’s where the luggage rack was. Good thing we’re light packers and don’t need a lot of space!

The bathroom was really standard, but it was clean! There’s really no complaints with this hotel as it met our exceptions and in a way exceed it!

Overall, we had a great stay, although we didn’t stay for the breakfast to start, we were on the road already. It was a short and sweet stay!

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver – British Columbia

During our road trip to Vancouver, we decided to stay at the Castle in the City, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and what a glorious stay it was! Although the hotel was undergoing some major renovations, it was still quite nice. The lobby wasn’t done yet, and one of the main reasons for our trip was the visit their Fairmont Store – which they are renovating out.

We stayed in their King Bed Deluxe Room and it was quite nice. It’s great as it still has the old feel to it, yet it’s not run down! The room was simple and that’s really all we need!

The neat thing about this bathroom was the flush handle – it’s like the bar that you use to flush! It’s not typically what you see inside a hotel, but it was fine! It was a weird side note I had in my mind when I saw it.

The stay was still really nice, with a view of Vancouver Art Gallery. I think the only disappointment was the Fairmont Store not being here anymore and was told the closest one was in Victoria – at the Fairmont Empress. We did find finding where to go for parking the car tricky as it was our first time in this area. We ended up just parking the car on the street and running inside to ask Concierge where to go. It was quite an ordeal as there was some protest outside the hotel as well. But, we managed and all was well!

Chatime – Calgary, Alberta

Recently, bubble tea places has been popping up around Calgary alot, and when we heard of Chatime in Chinatown, we knew we wanted to try this place out! Located right on Centre Street, a small store front exists with just a few tables – and they have only bubble tea.

We’ve been here twice now and both times, the drinks were pretty good. It does take a LONG time for your drink to come, and double check your order as we’ve been getting mix ups, or them forgetting items that you’ve paid for. The nice thing about here, you can really customize your drink with the amount of sweetness, ice and there are tons of toppings you can put in your drink.

I ordered their Chocolate Hazelnut Milk Tea and they didn’t goof it up -but it didn’t taste the same as my first time here. So, I think they may need a big more consistency – or there’s something going on as the wait is quite long for a bubble tea. The milk tea is quite nice though and you do get the chocolate/hazelnut taste!

We also ordered the Jasmine Milk Tea and usually with the toppings is where they seem to mess us – so if you ordered any toppings, just be sure to double check it. They do give you a bit of hassle, but ultimately – you paid for it! The Jasmine Milk tea is really good as well though!

Overall, their drinks are quite good. It can be worth the wait if they get it right! It’s a neat little place to go to! Make sure you do have some time as the first time we were there, we waiting over 40 minutes for the drinks. The second time was about 20 minutes. So, I would like to think they’re getting better!

Hooters (Barlow Trail) – Calgary, Alberta

Hooters has always been a restaurant franchise that had made a nice name for themselves, so when we heard that Hooters was closing their Calgary locations – we had to try it before they left!

We went in quite late – and Hooters does close at 10pm, so we pretty much just made it in time for their last call. We sat down and ordered their Fried Pickles which wasn’t what we were expecting as we normally think of spears of pickles – but it actually grew on us! It was pretty good!

Of course, we don’t go to a place like this and not order wings, so we had a some Salt and Pepper Wings and we had a few of their Hot Wings. Their wings were pretty decent in size and they were fried quite nicely. The hot wings was awesome as it was covered in hot sauce – making it a saucy, delicious mess!

Our overall experience here was quite decent! It wasn’t busy, but they still had a few tables. The service was really nice and the food was decent. It’s not a bad place to sit down for some pub grub!
