The Burner Restaurant – Malakwa, British Columbia

While driving through BC, we couldn’t help but noticing a giant burner. When we realized it was a restaurant, we knew we were eating at The Burner. Soon, this restaurant will be featured on Food Networks You Gotta Eat Here and hopefully will be sharing their wonderful food to everyone.

As I was in the area for the Salmon Run, I thought I should be eating Salmon… so I ordered their Blackened Pan Seared Sockeye Salmon with a side of smoked corn. I saw it on the menu for one of their condiments but really wanted some – so I asked for them. The salmon was definitely blackened as it was a little burnt, but not enough for it to be bitter or gross – so it was nice. The corn was amazing, you can definitely taste the smoked flavour in it and the entire meal was just awesome!

My husband ordered the Black Angus New York Steak Dinner which was a giant piece of steak, cooked to his liking. He also had mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The mashed potatoes was one of my favourites, and he devoured his entire plate in no time.

The overall experience was beyond what I was expecting. The service was good, the food came out quickly and everything was delicious! I actually cleaned the plate and proud of it!

Imperial Dragon Family Restaurant – Stratmore, Alberta

Sometimes on weekends, I like to just do nothing and visit a Chinese/Western buffet. This particular weekend, I found myself at Imperial Dragon Family Restaurant in Strathmore, Alberta. It is just located right off the highway and it’s pretty big inside with a decent sized parking lot.

Once inside, it’s huge inside, lots of tables and chairs and lots of selection for the buffet! We were really happy and got started right away!

I had a few plates, but the food selection is quite standard. The quality is pretty good as well! They did have a few odd-ball items such as deviled eggs but that tasted pretty good.

They even had some giant wontons in their smorg and that was awesome! We had quite a few wontons as they tasted alright and the broth was nice too!

Dessert was fun, they had a good selection of sweets from Chinese almond cookies, to jello and cakes. They even had ice cream with more than 2 flavours! So, I was really happy to have a scoop of maple walnut!

Overall, it’s a great place to stop into a family owned Chinese/Western restaurant and go for their buffet. I’m assuming that their food is going to taste pretty good as well since their buffet was good!

Moraine Lake Lodge – Moraine Lake, Alberta

I’ve been to Moraine Lake a few times and I’ve always wanted to go to the dining room here. Often when I go, the dining room is booked solid. This time, we went for a walk to Larch Valley/Sentinel Pass and then made a reservation for Moraine Lake Lodge – Dining Room. We got in for first seating on a Sunday – so there was room for us!

The dining room is quite small and intimate. It’s a lodge cabin decor and is warmed by a wood burning fireplace. It’s got lovely ambiance – warm and romantic!

We decided to skip on the appetizers this time and go for dessert as I always crave sweet food after a hike. So, my main entree was their Steelhead Trout which was cooked to perfection! The fish was fresh and delicious, with a beautiful crust outside and it sat in a little light broth. It was amazing!

My husband ordered Elk Tenderloin that was cooked with port wine with red cabbage. The tenderloin was tender and juicy with a nice sweetness from the port. It was absolutely delightful, and even the vegetables and potatoes tasted really good. We really enjoyed the sauce and wiped it all up with some bread at the end!

Now, it was finally dessert time. We ordered their Chocolate Torte which was a dark chocolate torte with an amazing sea salt caramel brittle. The dessert was amazing and it wasn’t a sweet dessert which we really appreciate. It’s sweet, but not over the top sweet which makes it truly enjoyable.

Overall, everything here was amazing. The price was a tad high, but the atmosphere, the service and the quality of food is what you’re paying for. This was a magnificent experience and would be perfect for any occasion!

Sutton Place Hotel – Edmonton, Alberta

During one of our stays in Edmonton, Alberta, we got to stay at The Sutton Place hotel in downtown Edmonton. The main entrance was a little confusing at first as it looked like it was the entrance to their restaurant – but it really was the front door.

We got checked into our room and we were on the top floor – which was pretty high on the 26th floor. The room itself was quite nice and the pool was a set of stairs right across the from elevators. Although I didn’t go and enjoy this pool, it was a quite a spectacular looking one!

The room was quite spacious and make it a comfortable stay. It offered your basic hotel amenities and that’s really all we ever ask for when we stay anywhere!

Our room had a large comfortable bed. It was really a good bed but there was some motor or something that made pumping noises throughout the night. I’m not sure if it’s from the elevator or from the pool above but it was loud and distracting.

The bathroom was pretty standard as well. Lots of counter top space and quite a large tub – even though we used the shower. The bathroom amenities were very nice as well.

Overall, the location of the hotel was really nice and the price was right. However, due to the noise level in the room – I got absolutely no sleep. I’m sure other rooms further down the hallway or on other levels won’t be so bad. Self parking costs just over $30/night as well, and it’s in an underground parkade. That elevator doesn’t even take you to the main lobby either, so it’s a little bit of a hike.

Green Bamboo Peking House – Pincher Creek, AB

Although we haven’t ventured much into the Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass area, we have started to venture in that direction more lately. We were looking for lunch one afternoon and found ourselves on Main Street of Pincher Creek – and we walked into the first restaurant after we parked – which turns out to be Green Bamboo Peking House which is a spacious restaurant that can seat many people, owned and ran by Chinese.

As standard Asians, we’d order tea. On this particular day, there was no smorg, but their buffet was a big one with many options! I’m sure we’ll be back one day to try it out! As this was just a lunch, we ordered a Wor Wonton to split and it was really good! Although it looks plain and empty, there’s a good portion of wontons in there and the soup base had a lot of taste, the vegetables were really fresh!

We also decided to order Singapore Style Noodles and it was packed with flavour with a good kick to it! The shrimp and bbq pork was really tasty and good portions of that as well. The noodles weren’t too greasy and it wasn’t all short pieces of rice noodles either.

Overall, we enjoyed it here. With sitting in the car for a long time, it didn’t make us feel sick as it wasn’t greasy. The dishes were well seasoned and there was actually a lot of customers at the odd time when we went! Hopefully their smorg is awesome!
