Heartland Cafe – Okotoks, Alberta

I’ve been eyeing going to Heartland Cafe for a very long time. There has been previous occasions where I’ve been there and no one seated us so we walked away. Finally, we went there one afternoon and there was actually some service!

It took awhile before the waitress came give us our menus let alone take our order. So, be prepared to spend an afternoon here if you’re going for lunch, but the food is worth it! I already went there with the anticipation it’ll take a long time from previous times so I started with a drink. I did order their Flat Iron Steak Sandwich with their soup of the day and it was something worth the wait!

We also had a their Ahi Tuna Tacos but we ate it like a lunch and it was really fresh and light. It was mouth watering and tasty.

The environment was great as we sat outside on their patio. It was fun to watch the people go by and I guess it was a car show that weekend so we got to watch unique cars go by. The food was amazing and worth every second!

94 Take the Cake – Okotoks, Alberta

I love going to little towns and I often find myself going to Okotoks as it’s closer for me to go there than downtown Calgary! A super cold evening, just around Christmas I parked outside 94 Take the Cake without knowing it. So, as I was done my evening, I stopped in before heading home.

I had to wait forever for the lens on my camera to thaw out, so we get a foggy look yet mystical carrot cake! I really wanted to eat the carrot cake, so I dug into this huge piece of cake that was perfectly cooked, well spiced and just amazing! The cream cheese was divine and it was just the perfect snack for the drive home! This slice is big enough to share, which I appreciate!

Then came my Latte, I really needed this to warm up my fingers. I of course was still wearing a dress and the owner of the shop came and put this giant fluffy blanket over my lap and said I was silly. She looked at me as though I was 5 years old, but her love for me really showed me she cared for her shop and customers. It wasn’t that cold but it was a December night in Alberta! The latte though was really tasty. I didn’t need to do anything to it and it was the perfect compliment to my carrot cake.

This bakeshop was so warm and inviting, and the coziness to the shop was so hospitable. It’s a place I can see myself being in all the time if I lived in this town. The owner told me that the original “house” that the shop is in was an cold police station! How neat is that!! This cake shop is a little tucked away but it’s a must go to! Their cakes are amazing and I think next time I need to order a cake if my friends don’t want to bake one for me, I will get it from here!

Brown Sugar Bakeshop – Okotoks, Alberta

My coworkers know how much I love cinnamon buns and when they had an opportunity to tell me about Brown Sugar Bake Shop, I went there at my first opportunity! It’s located on the North end of Okotoks right in a strip plaza near Drake Landing.

Once we figured out what we wanted, as there was a lot to choose from, I decided I was going for their Caramel Sticky Buns which was heavenly! It was really light and fluffy with the perfect amount of sweetness from the caramel! It wasn’t a small piece either, everything about it was just perfect!

Then, for some savoury food, we ordered their Taco Beef Bun which was absolutely amazing! It was seriously beef taco in a bun instead of a taco shell. I think I enjoyed this more than a taco! The meat inside was well seasoned and flavoured to taste like beef that you would find in a taco. The bun, again was light and fluffy – but not so light where it just falls apart.

Then, their soup of the day was Chicken Taco Soup which does sound redundant with the options we picked in savoury selection – but everything was so different and delicious! The soup was hearty and well seasoned and made me want to make something like it at home right away!

Overall, a fabulous experience with great food and service. There was a lot of customers that came in just for the sticky buns, so you can tell it was a good one! I know we’ll be back as I enjoyed them so much and there was lots of other goodies I would love to try in their display case. The even have a wide selection of gluten-free products for those who need it!

Grand Central Bar & Grill – Okotoks, Alberta

We always go to Light Up Okotoks during the festive season and this year was no different. We went there a little late so we decided to go eat first. We randomly walked into Grand Central Bar & Grill right on Elizabeth Street.

We weren’t actually hungry or anything so we just had some wings and pizza! We ordered a serving of their Salt and Pepper Wings. The wings were fried really nicely and they tasted quite delicious!

Then, we shared an Okotokian Pizza which was a pizza with ham, pepperoni, mushroom, and pineapple and topped with a slice of tomato on each slice of pizza. The pizza was tasty and the crust was pretty good and not greasy at all.

Overall, we had a great experience at the Grand Central Bar and it was fun to sit by the window and watch the crowds go by. It was a lovely evening and we got to see the giant Christmas tree all lite up. It was a great experience and we’re sure we will be back for snacks and appetizers one day!

The Royal Duke Eatery & Pub – Okotoks, Alberta

We recently went to Okotoks for their annual Light Up Okotoks in their old town. It was fun and it was a chilly evening, so after the tree got lit, we went into The Royal Duke Eatery & Pub to fill my belly and to warm up! It was a large space and the place was packed, which was great!

Of course, I sat down and went to my go to drink right now…. spicy tomato juice called Virgin Caesars! Yes, Brad, I still like it! 🙂 This one was a little disappointing though, I think there was too much ice or something, it seemed a tad diluted.

We started our dinner with their Button Ribs which is dry garlic ribs for $12! I didn’t eat some ribs before taking the picture… which makes me think it wasn’t a great deal at all! They were good ribs though!

I ordered the Philly Steak Sandwich which is a typical sandwich. I don’t venture much when I’m in a pub, I try to stick to more pub food, but I needed dinner so I got this! It was pretty good and for the side, it was clam chowder! This was a good size plate for $14! It was pretty standard! I enjoyed my sandwich, but I ended up eating all the meat and left the bread at the end.

My husband ordered the NY Steak Sandwich and it was actually really good! He had the side order of fries and gravy. It was pretty good! I think I enjoyed his entree more than mine, but I wasn’t a fan of the gravy for some strange reason! Who doesn’t like brown sauce?! I don’t know what my problem was, but it was still good!

Overall, it was a decent pub place. Pubs aren’t fancy food, so it fit the bill. Service was excellent, even though they were so busy. At the end of the night, we did enjoy ourselves but we did have a bit of negative thought in our minds from the dry ribs. I guess just opt out for it!
