Hooters (Barlow Trail) – Calgary, Alberta

Hooters has always been a restaurant franchise that had made a nice name for themselves, so when we heard that Hooters was closing their Calgary locations – we had to try it before they left!

We went in quite late – and Hooters does close at 10pm, so we pretty much just made it in time for their last call. We sat down and ordered their Fried Pickles which wasn’t what we were expecting as we normally think of spears of pickles – but it actually grew on us! It was pretty good!

Of course, we don’t go to a place like this and not order wings, so we had a some Salt and Pepper Wings and we had a few of their Hot Wings. Their wings were pretty decent in size and they were fried quite nicely. The hot wings was awesome as it was covered in hot sauce – making it a saucy, delicious mess!

Our overall experience here was quite decent! It wasn’t busy, but they still had a few tables. The service was really nice and the food was decent. It’s not a bad place to sit down for some pub grub!

Shark Club Sports Bar & Grill – Calgary, AB

One evening, we decided to relax at the Sharks Club at Deerfoot Meadows, and the bar was really nice and large. Parking was a bit tough to find but we managed to get a good spot regardless. This restaurant/bar is really large and spacious – and we enjoyed their patio upstairs.

We weren’t here too long so we just had some drinks and appetizers. We started with their wings Oven Roasted Chicken Wings in both hot, and salt & pepper flavours. The wings were quite decent, backed really nicely. We came on wing night and just ordered a bunch and they were very enjoyable! Even though baked, they had a really nice crust on the outside and juicy on the inside.

We also tried an order of their Pepper Prawns which are prawns sauteed with peppers, chilies, onion and garlic. The prawns were very flavourful and not over cooked. I enjoyed them, and normally a great dish to share!

Overall, the place was really nice to just sit back with drinks and wings! We had a great time and we’ll be back when it’s not so busy so it’s easier to find parking.

Woody’s Taphouse – Calgary, Alberta

I’m always looking for a new hang out place after work or whatever for a casual drink and appetizers. I stumbled into Woody’s Taphouse as I wanted some wings! Wing they have here and they’re pretty good!

We sat down and ordered a drink and I actually opt’ed for a non-alcoholic drink that was girly – called Shirley Temple! I know, I was probably drunk to begin with to order something like that, but it was a delicious fruit drink!

We ordered wings as it was wing night, and I really enjoy Lemon Peppered Wings lately as my favourite wing place has tons of delicious options such as lemon pepper. These wings were well seasoned and has crispy skin and juicy meat. It’s not a meaty wing, but they are good!

We also tried a saucy wing, their Honey Hot Wings and it was saucy. It’s defintely a tad more “sweet” than “heat” but it’s a nice sauce. It’s more like Franks with honey – not the best not the worst! But, for it’s price during wing nights, it’s a great deal! I love their wings as they’re so crispy, so I don’t think I’d choose this flavour again… but there’s other options to pick from!

Overall, the prices are right and it’s a nice casual atmosphere for whatever you may be in the mood for. Their specials are great – so be sure to check their featured menu prior to going! It’s a great deal!

Kilt & Caber Ale House – Calgary, Alberta

Every once in awhile, I have the need for some chicken wings and this time, I found myself on the patio of Kilt & Caber in McKenzie Towne. It’s not a hard location to find at all, and it’s a nice place!

We were seated outside (on a warn evening, of course) and it wasn’t bad! With a newly installed fireplace in the space, it was quite inviting! So, I ordered my drink of choice during this phase, my Virgin Caesar!

From there, we started with wings! We got Salt and Peppered Wings as it was during their wing night! The wings were really good, fried nicely and flavoured fully! Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside… and it wasn’t meatless wings where it’s just skin and bones! So, we were very satisfied! The picture doesn’t show that it looks good, but we often don’t ask for the celery and carrot sticks when it’s a choice! Veggies isn’t something I eat if I have a choice!

I was trying to eat a little meal, so I ordered their Greek Wrap with soup, and it wasn’t a little meal at all! The wrap was made of their naan, stuffed with chicken, lettuce and cucumbers, and topped with their tzatziki sauce! It was a decent wrap, nothing extraordinary, but not bad either! The soup was their soup of the day, Cream of Broccoli and it was pretty good, and it seemed to be perfect for a chillier patio evening!

My husband ordered the strangest looking Sheppard’s Pie which was rectangular! Strangely, he ordered it with a salad as well, so it was just strange. The Sheppard’s pie tasted fine, but it didn’t seem like it was made fresh. It almost seemed like it was just defrosted and a giant bowl of brown gravy was poured on top. At least he ate the entire thing, but everything tastes better with gravy!

Overall, I think this is a great place for wings and drinks. Unless you’re looking for an average meal where nothing really matters, then it’s fine! I really enjoyed the wings, so I’m sure I’ll be back for those! It is an Ale house afterall! I’m not sure what I was thinking!

Mug Shotz Sports Bar & Grill – Calgary

I’m often looking for a great place for delicious wings, and when a friend told me about Mug Shotz I thought “why not!?” This location turns out to be a tad tricky to find for the first time. It’s not exactly located RIGHT on Ogden road as the address suggest, but it’s right behind it, right before you reach Blackfoot Trail.

We got here on a Wednesday night and it was packed already! So, we sat at the bar and then later moved to a table. We ordered quite a few wings as I love wings, and of course we tried their signature Mug Shotz Salt & Pepper Wings which was amazing!

We also got an order of their Sweet Thai Chili Wings which was absolutely delicious! Sweet Thai Chili sauce is great on anything and everything, and wings are no exception! Sometimes when you order wings and it’s a saucy type, the texture isn’t as great, but here – they were able to maintain the chicken wing texture with a hint of crisp and it definitively helped to absorb all the sauce.

Then, we decided we would try their Dill Pickle Wing which was another amazing wing. If you love pickles, this is definitely the wing to order! As gross as it looks and kind of sounds, it’s really amazing! Think of a fried chicken sandwich without the bread and all the other toppings… you’re left with amazing meat and pickles!

At the end of this visit, I’m glad to say I’ve found a great new wing place that offers great tastes, flavours, and all at a great price! The wings are large and full of meat – and they all taste like what they claim they should taste.
