Crepe Avenue

Kensington is not a place I normally go, but one afternoon after I got a rock chip filled, I decided that Crepe Avenue was the place I wanted to go for lunch! I’ve heard great things about this small crepe house, and I went!

Parking is the toughest part as it is in Kensington, which is one of the reasons why I’m not there a lot. There’s basically only street parking available, and not a whole lot of it either! Regardless, we got a spot and made it to Crepe Avenue!

I loved their menu, it had your usual suspects as well as new flavours of crepes for both sweet and savoury! As this was lunch, we had a savoury crepe each, and we decided if we still had room for dessert, we’d split a sweet crepe! Well, their standard crepes are massive and stuffed generously with filling! You’re definitely getting what you pay for! I ordered the Smoked Salmon Crepe which was a delicious combination of smoked salmon, cheese, teriyaki sauce and mayonnaise with some fresh lettuce and tomatoes!

We also tried something from the Thai menu, which was the Phad Thai Crepe, which was very delicious with the balance flavours of sweet, savoury and spicy! This crepe was stuffed with bean sprouts, peanuts, egg, shrimp, tofu and phad thai sauce.

The texture of the crepes itself wasn’t the soft crepes, so it does seem like it doesn’t wrap as nicely. But, the texture is really good as it adds a slight crunch factor – especially during the first few bites when you haven’t quite gotten into the part of the crepe where all the goodness hides.

We also enjoyed a unique twist on the Hong Kong Style Milk Tea, which is their Thai Iced Milk Tea which was really good actually! I believe they use the Red Rose teas to make this, with evaporated milk. It works well, and tastes awesome! One of the few milk tea’s I really enjoy in the city!

Overall, this was a really fun place to go! It was a great kick start to a weekend! I love it here, the food is great, the service was pretty good, and as long as there’s parking, I would be back!

Holy Crepe Food Truck

I have always loved our food trucks, and when I heard of a new truck that makes crepes, that became on the top of my priority list! We followed Holy Crepe as they made it to Shawville Gate SE, and waited for them to open and get ready as I browsed through Future Shop!

I knew I wanted a sweet crepe, and so I started the order with a Sweet Jesus with Blueberry and it was one of the best tasting dessert/sweet crepes I’ve had in awhile!

As a savoury crepe, we ordered Holy Smoke Original and it was filled with perfectly cooked Montreal Smoked meat with delicious aioli. Also in the crepe has mushrooms, peppers, pickles, cheese and onions. This makes the perfect combination of stuffing for a perfectly cooked crepe!

Homemade Chinese Man Tou – 饅頭

Home Made Chinese Steamed Buns – Wan Tou

My brother-in-law came to visit, and as a welcome gift, I decided to make one of his favourites, which is Man Tou! The other thing he really likes is white rice, and that’s definitely harder to bring to the airport to greet with (in my opinion – without doing something fancy to it). So, I just made a small batch, and it’s quite simple!

Ingredients: (makes 8-10 small man tous)
3/4 tsp Yeast
1/2 cup Warm Water
2 cup Flour
1 tbsp Sugar
1 tsp Oil

First, you mix the yeast with the warm water, and give it time to activate. You can also use instant yeast, especially if you’re pressed on time. I was pressed on time, but didn’t have instant yeast – so my end results was a little more dense.

After the yeast had doubled, mix the sugar with the flour, then pour the yeast mixture and oil into the flour mixture as well. If you have an electric mixture, use the hook attachment and knead for about 10 minutes. If you’re like me, then just knead until the dough is soft, smooth and quite “silky”.

Now, you can roll out your dough into a rectangle, and roll up one end. Then, with a pastry cutter, cut the log into pieces and place on little squares of parchment paper.

Now, you can set up your steamer while the dough rises for about 20 minutes.

When you’re ready to steam, steam it for about 13 to 15 minutes if you’re making the large man tous, and 10-12 minutes for the little ones! Serve while hot!

Heinz Bagel Bites Cheese and Pepperoni

I’ve been looking for some frozen food that is pretty good, fast, and delicious. I ran across Heinz products in the freezer aisle and headed right for Bagel Bites. I picked up a box in Cheese & Pepperoni! A normal box comes with 9 little bagel bites, which seems plenty for 2 adults for a quick & hot breakfast – or an after work snack.

It’s rather simple to prepare, as you have the option to put them in the microwave for a few minutes or in a oven (and even the toaster oven!). I had some time, so I put my bagel bites into the toaster oven for about 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, I took out the bagel bites and all the cheese was melted and the bagel was toasted! It was a wonderful little bite of goodness!

Ping Pang Pong

Yes, I am aware that having Dim Sum in Las Vegas is odd, but we did it! We went to Gold Coast Hotel just off the main strip for Dim Sum at a place called Ping Pang Pong

I’ve got to say, not bad at all for dim sum!! The quality of the Chinese food was really good, and I honestly don’t really remember the price, but I believe it was very reasonable – otherwise, I would either be saying “it’s a GREAT deal!” or “it was SO NOT worth it!”

We started with a bowl of jook or congee – pork with thousand year old egg (Preserved Egg Porridge), which is a very common and popular Chinese rice porridge! It was actually really good, and the texture of the jook was smooth and done quite well!

No matter where I go, I’ve always got my favourites – like Chicken Feet which always seems to be delicious! It’s not exception here, the sauce is really one of my favourites and it was tender!

Also, you really can’t go anywhere without enjoying some Ha Gow – Shrimp Dumpling, and the shrimp was really fresh, sweet and crisp! The dumpling skin was really nice – steamed to perfection!

My parents really like Steamed Pork Balls, so of course they order it! I didn’t mind it here, and it was great!

Steamed Bean Curd Roll

Beef Tendons are one of my favourites when done right. Here, they did this right too! The tendons was infused with flavour and the tendons were soo soft with the “tender” gummyness texture. It was intense and deep, and cooked with the perfect marinade!

This was a weird order, it’s a Shrimp Balls with Crispy Rice, which is like the typical shrimp balls, but they covered it in crispy puffed rice! It added a new dimension of texture to what seems like a simple dim sum! It was a great idea! It worked!

I love any sort of rice crepes, but we ordered 1 order of Beef Rice Crepes, and I honestly thought it wasn’t enough! They actually stuffed their crepes with lots of filling, as some places just put a thin layer of meat in. The actual crepe was really fresh, soft, silky and quite thin!

Overall, this turned out to be a fantastic place for lunch! Everything was so delicious, and the service was excellent. Food constantly came out – which was really easy to over eat! This would be a place I would return to if I wanted a dim sum fix in Las Vegas! Everything was really fresh and you can definitely tell all the dishes were steamed not long before arriving onto the table!
