Soban – Whitecourt, Alberta

Whitecourt was where we decided to stopover during our little road trip. We got checked in and went out to find some food. We found Soban Restaurant as I had noodle soup in mind — and they would have udon or something! This restaurant was in one of the back streets but not tucked away on that street that offered Korean and Japanese cuisine.

We were the only tables there and we saw a few people do take out meals which was pretty neat as it was quite late and people still order out! We started with Edamame which was a big plate, and pretty good!

We both ordered udon, we got their Shrimp Udon which was actually tempura shrimp with udon and it was pretty good! It came in large bowls and they both started with a salad.

The other bowl of udon we got was their Beef Udon and yes, the picture doesn’t do its justice, but it was actually really good! The beef, they used their Korean Bulgogi beef for it and it worked perfectly!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal! It hit the spot and it was just good!

Sammy’s Steak & Pizza – Falher, Alberta

We left Calgary around 5:30AM this one weekend… and I decided to sleep in the car. I woke up every once in awhile to see where we were going, and I only knew “North” was the answer. We passed Edmonton, and kept going. When I finally got up, we were around 750kms North of Calgary, in a town called Falher, AB. Here, we decided I was hungry and found a place to eat. Basically, there was 2 options, both was pizza. We choose Sammy’s Steak & Pizza right on Main Street.

We went inside, and it was pretty cool little place! Definitely a sense of old town and small community as the other restaurant guests that came in basically all knew each other. They’d just sit and have a drink or just social. It was pretty cool to me! The service was great, but the food did come out a little slow. It totally was worth it though!

By the time we figured we would share a pizza for lunch, we ordered the Meat lover’s Pizza which we figured everything was hand made as it took a while and it tasted great! It looked amazing once it came to the table, with perfectly melted cheese and tons of meat!

To our excitement, the slices were thick — with meat!! It was impressive and we gobbled it up in no time!

Overall, this little place had such a wonderful pizza that wasn’t greasy at all! Well, it’s greasy as all pizza is but the crust wasn’t greasy and it made the entire experience really enjoyable! The prices here in general was extremely reasonable!

Diana Restaurant – Drumheller, Alberta

Touring Alberta some more recently and we found ourselves hungry during a late lunch hour in Drumheller. We originally wanted Vietnamese, which was closed, but we found Diana Restaurant right on Centre Street (basically Main Street), so it was easy to find with lots of parking.

We went inside and got seated in a booth and we looked around – couldn’t help but giggle as it was decorated with everything “Asian” and kind of retro actually! This place totally feels like a family restaurant as it appears there was only 1 person taking care of the front of the house and 1 in the back. Service was still really good and the food came out relatively fast. I wasn’t feeling 100% so I wanted something less greasy, so I opted for their Wor Wonton Soup which had quite a few wonton in the bowl — around 12 of them! I’m afraid to talk about the taste as I know I lost some tastebuds from not feeling good! If I had to say something, it would be that it was really quite good!! It just needed a little salt or soy sauce.. or even hot sauce!

My husband loves pork chop and he jumped to the opportunity to have pork chop. It was called Grilled Pork Chops off the menu, and it’s what it sounds like! We were just surprised that it came with 2 giant slices. Of course, I had some to try as well, and it tasted pretty good! Well seasoned, well cooked and it was still tender and juicy.

Overall, we enjoyed our little stop here! It was quite fun and the atmosphere was pretty neat! Not your traditional Chinese food, but as it says outside “Western Chinese”!

Vintage Pub & Grill – Drumheller, Alberta

We found ourselves visiting Atlas Coal Mine this one weekend out near Drumheller, AB and afterwards needed to find some food. We ventured to Drumheller downtown and found a corner lot pub & grill called Vintage Pub & Grill and figured it would be a great place for us to eat before heading back home!

We seated ourselves by the window and it was a large place with pool tables and all! The service was excellent and very attentive, even when it got busier towards the end of our stay!

I really didn’t know what to order, so I ordered myself a Pulled Pork Sandwich with fries and gravy. Everything was super delicious, even though it’s not the best fries ever, there was something special in the gravy that made me eat it all up anyway! It’s like there’s 5-spice in the gravy or something, but the extra oomph was awesome!

My other half ordered the Chicken Parmesan which was actually better than ever expected! The chicken parm was cooked perfectly, still juicy and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The sauce was not runny or watery and it was just an amazing meal!

Overall, this was an amazing meal, and it wasn’t because we were hungry that made this place great — it was actually great! We were thinking about bringing our friends out here when we return to Drumheller next year!

Qoola Frozen Yogurt Bar – Market Mall, Calgary AB

I have been on a Frozen yogurt craze once I learned about them. I was in the north this one evening, and decided to take a walk through Market Mall in Northwest Calgary and found myself in front of Qoola Frozen Yogurt Bar which is located near the Bay entrance to the mall.

I walked in without question, right to the back where you grab a bowl and fill it up with frozen yogurt. They had a nice selection of flavours, which is great!

After I selected my flavours, I went straight to the topping bar where I topped my froyo with all sorts of goodies. One thing that really stuck in my mind that was kind of neat was their Green Tea Mochi, which was a big green blob that was green tea flavour! They had lots of bursting bubbles or bobas which is pretty neat to me, and I’ve only experienced this through frozen yogurt – so be sure to grab some!

After my visit to the topping bar, we weight the cups and pay per ounce that we selected. Then, of course we sit down and enjoy the creations!

I quite like the topping selection here and the frozen yogurt isn’t full of ice crystals. It’s really smooth and tastes like the flavours it claims it’s suppose to! It’s a great treat and it’s always welcome as you can pick as much or as little of whatever!
