Zellers Family Restaurant – Sundridge Mall

We got up early and we drove to Sunridge Mall just go to go to the Zellers diner which I was told it was the last one in the city that was opened now. When I was young, my mom use to take me to the exact same location for breakfast – so it was neat going back to the original diner I tried years ago. We actually got there right when they take the breakfast menu away, so I ordered Z’s Mile High burger with fries.

The burger was made of juicy beef burger topped with bacon, cheddar and swiss cheese, bbq sauce, onion right, with veggies. The burger was really tasty as the patty was actually really juicy – slathered with BBQ sauce. Then, as you can see in the picture, the burger was topped with a mile high of the condiments and the difference of texture of the onion right has taken this burger over the top! I love eating burgers and this one is one of the better ones. Too bad eventually this restaurant will be closing. On a happier note, my husband ordered a plate of Breaded Pork Cutlet which he enjoyed thoroughly!

This plate of food was a pork cutlet crusted with savoury schnitzel breading, with a side of mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. The pork cutlet breading was packed with tons of flavour, and even though it was a thin piece of pork, it wasn’t dry at all! It was quite enjoyable! Then, there is nothing I love more than mashed potatoes and gravy – so that was a plus on the plate. The mixed vegetables was cooked until the life was taken from the vegetables, as the didn’t even hold their shape anymore and the colours was completely pale. It was the only thing left on both of our plates at the end of our meal! Not bad!

Chef Mario Street Burgers Food Truck – Calgary, Alberta

Over the weekend, we visited some food trucks at Calgary East Village, where we saw Chef Mario’s truck come by. We noticed it looked a little different – from his pizza truck, so we knew it was something different. Chef Mario is a really happy guy, and he’s here to have fun while putting smiles on his customers faces. We asked him where his pizza truck was, and he replied “next week, gotta switch it up to have some fun!”

The menu consisted of 1 item to avoid confusion (too much choice), and for $10, you’ll get the Italian Love Affair which is a combo of drink, fries and a 2 patty burger!

It’s a wonderful deal, considering how much it costs for a drink and burger anywhere else! On this occasion, he was giving cheesecake with every love affair purchase. We were able to tell the cheesecake was home-made, and made with love!

Burger King – Birmingham Airport

As we know from a previous trip, Europe has really good burgers at Burger King so, we gave it a shot, at the airport! We were right, the burger was excellent! We tried the Smoked Bacon and Cheddar Burger and the patty was quite good! The best fast food burger we have had in awhile. Too bad burgers from Burger King back home just isn’t the same, and often under cooked!

The combo like all other places comes with a drink and fries, and the French Fries here was really good as well! I think they actually use better oil to fry it up! Not a bad start to the overseas trip! 🙂

Five Guys Burgers and Fries

I’ve been in search of the “best burger ever” status for my records and was introduced to Five Guys Burgers and Fries and with my hopes nice and high, knowing that all their ingredients were fresh, it couldn’t go wrong!

We sent in to Five Guys Burgers and quickly saw a long line up. It was on the weekends, but quite late in the afternoon. So, to my delight, I waited in line to order my burger.

I ordered a Regular Hamburger thinking it was the size of a normal hamburger. When I got my burger, it was 2 patties high, and I loaded it up with their condiments. I must say, it was a delicious burger, but some how, I’ve made burgers that was even tastier. So, I was unable to crown them “best burger ever” in my books. I’m almost looking for a place that can make a burger better than mine, and till this day, I haven’t found it.

I’m not saying their burgers are bad by any means. I sat there, and within 5 minutes, I gobbled down the entire burger.

We also had the Regular Bacon Cheeseburger thinking more “fat” would equal “more deliciousness”. It was true, this burger truly was more delicious, but not as good as my burgers.

Five Guys Burgers is a location I will be back – but after I’ve tried all other burger places, in search of the best burger ever! 🙂

Alley Burger Food Truck

We went to try Alley Burger Food Truck prior to the pilot project, when they opened a week prior – probably to get a system going just to test the waters before the event that was put on by Mayer Nenshi.

We got there quite early and we saw the Alley burger park it’s truck. We then had to wait for some supply trucks to come and do their deliveries. When it was all said and done, we waited for 3 hours to try a burger! It was lunch time, and I made the mistake of coming on an empty stomach, not expecting such a long wait!

On the menu is basically 2 types of burgers: The Whole Truck Burger is their 100% Beef burger, and the Alley burger is 100% Pork Burger. When we got to the front of the line though, Connie came out of the truck to erase the Alley Burger from the menu as it pretty much sold out right in front of us. The Alley burger is very special as it is different from all other burgers: pork and roasted garlic sausage patty with Quebec cheese and piri piri aioli which sounds extraordinary, but we’ll have to try it next time!

So, we ordered a small Whole Truck Burger and a regular Whole Truck burger (the difference is one patty or two), and even though I was hungry, I’ve passed a point of really hungry – so if I ate too much then, I would feel sick. So, I just stuck with a bit of greasy food! LOL! You’re able to put toppings on the Whole Truck burger which is great as you can customize it to the way you like it. These toppings are Piri Piri Aioli, Brassica Mustard, Sliced Pickles, Jalapenos, Onions, Lettuce, Tomatoes. For an extra dollar each, you can have additional toppings of Cheese curds, Farm Egg, Bacon. The burgers were quite large, regardless of which size you choose! The patties are tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection. My bun on the other hand was a little charred, but at least toppings and condiments made it all better! 🙂

We also tried their fries, as it was deep fried in duck fat and being Asian, one of the best fats to use is duck fat! It’s delicious! And, needless to say, the fries were delicious! There were some seasoning shakers you’re able to use and sprinkle onto your fries, we chose the Smokey Bacon and Cheddar flavour, and the other flavours that they had were: Truffle Salt & Pepper, Chipotle Bite, Curry in a hurry, Sea Salt and Spicy Portuguese. The fries tasted good without seasoning, but adding that extra bit took the fries to a whole new level! I would recommended trying one of their shakers!

Everything was so good, I’m sure there will be a next time!! 🙂 Just gotta go even earlier, because watching them set up doesn’t mean you’ll get the food you want!! I’m so happy for the success of food trucks! The best part about this entire experience was being star struck when Connie DeSousa was taking orders and handing them out to their customers. Connie was awesome on Top Chef Canada and her restaurant in downtown Calgary – CHARcut was really good too! So, the overall experience was just a great experience to just be apart of it all! What a privilege it was!
