Beamers Coffee Bar – Canmore, AB

I really enjoy doing nothing with a cup of caffeine or hot drink and this time was no exception while in Canmore, Alberta. We stopped in Beamers Coffee Bar as it was recommended by a good friend. Although just off Main Ave, this little establishment is very popular!

The menu is very extensive and delicious. The prices are quite reasonable as it is competitive with many coffee shops in the area. There is lots of hot food as well as drinks and snacks available.

At the end of the day, we enjoyed a delicious flavoured latte and it was brewed really nicely. I hate it when my coffee is burnt or overly sweet, but they have managed to make my latte the way I like it!

I am sure I will be back and relaxing here again as the experience was right up my alley, plus the coffee was amazing!

Rockin Horse Cafe – Balzac, AB

A really neat place we stopped at for breakfast one morning was the Rockin Horse Cafe in Balzac and it’s a gas station with a cafe in it. It was actually really neat and it’s just off the highway pass the railway tracks.

We were here to grab a quick bite breakfast on the beginning leg of a road trip. I had ordered the Breakfast Sandwich which was like a sandwich with egg, bacon and cheese. It was really good actually! I love grilled cheese sandwiches with bacon in it, so this was one with an egg!

My husband decided to try the Rockin’ Horse Original which was a breakfast with 2 eggs, ham, home fries and toast. It’s almost like a Asian breakfasts so he really enjoyed it!

This was a great little stop and definitely a place where the locals go, as everyone seemed to know everyone – giving us really funny looks. The food was good and quite cheap as well! I would recommend Rockin Horse cafe if you’re in this area looking for breakfast!

Kaffee Stube Edelweiss Village – Calgary, Alberta

Ah, German food, ja? Das ist gut! I found Edelweiss Village which is a German Market, but inside, there’s a cafe called Kaffee Stube which is a pretty cool “fast food” place! It’s pretty big and pretty busy, and most of the people who go to the cafe eat sweets with coffee… except for me, I get real food!

I had to order myself a Hot Chocolate as we’re in a cafe, on a cold day! It was a delicious and decadent hot chocolate with a great chocolate wafer roll on the side! It was so good that I got a tin of these wafers from the market on my way out!

We ordered a Red Borscht as it was one of the soup of the day. It’s also one of my favourite soups (I know, I love a lot of things…), but I really enjoyed the flavours of this soup! It was quite different from the Ukranian ones I’ve tried.

My lunch was their Ukrainan Classic which had sauerkraut topped with a Bratwurst, and homemade Perogies! It was a tad costly at $10.25 for only a few perogies! I must admit, the food was good, but I’m not sure if it was worth that much for a fast food/take out place, which is really too bad.

Then, we ordered a plate of their Schnitzel Plate which had pork schnitzel, German potato salad with sauerkraut for $12.95! The Schnitzel was a tad disappointing as they took it out of the smorg and heated it up in the microwave, which made it soggy. The flavours were great, so maybe next time, I’ll take it home and bake it until golden and crispy!

Even though it was costly, it was decent food and there was still a LONG line up. It tells you something! I would return as well, and have some sweets as they look delicious! I’m sure it will be a cheaper experience as well when we do that!

Chuckwagon Cafe – Turner Valley, Alberta

I really enjoy watching Food Network in my spare time, or if I’m not watching it, it will be on in the background. This one time, I was watching You Gotta Eat Here and they were talking about Chuckwagon Cafe out in Turner Valley – so we figured it will be nice to meet up with my sister-in-law and her significant other for breakfast. The cafe is in a renovated barn and it’s not very large – and it fills up fast! So, either go early, or just be prepared to wait in line.

I knew what I wanted as John Catucci raved about their Flat Iron Steak Benedict with buttery croissant with butter, toasted… instead of using an English Muffin. Then, topped with their Flat Iron Steak, which is cooked to perfection and super tender, as they raise their cattle themselves! Then, topped with an egg, which I love it poached to soft. Of course, this was topped with their hollandaise sauce! It was heavenly and I’d recommend this dish as well!

My other half was being kind of odd… he ordered their lunch special for breakfast and asked for their 9oz New York Strip Steak enjoyed as their Steak Sandwich format, with soup on the side (Beef and Barley soup was their soup of the day). The steak was tender and juicy, seasoned nicely and grilled to the perfect rare temperature. He loved it and I basically didn’t hear much from him until he was done!

This is definitely somewhere I’d recommend going to, if you don’t mind the drive. We took the long way there and went through Okotoks and saw Big Rock prior to going for breakfast. The prices are on the high side for this cafe, but the food is really good, and the service is really friendly. I’m actually going to put bets on the fact we will be back, as I’m still in search for a perfect burger. I’m hopeful it may come from here!

Dairy Lane Cafe – Calgary, Alberta

My favourite thing to do on weekends is to wake up early and find breakfast! I love breakfast, as normally I have the weirdest breakfast… so, I really enjoy traditional (I guess “American”) breakfast. Lately, I’ve been eating wontons for breakfast which a lot of people think it’s so strange. So, I seek out regular breakfasts when I have the time! This time I find myself wandering in the Northwest part of the city at a place called Dairy Lane Cafe which is a small but popular cafe!

We got seated about 20 minutes after arrival, and that was pretty much as fast as it can get for this location! Once we got seated, I needed a Hot Chocolate… as nice as the outside looked it was still quite breezy! Now that I’ve warmed up some, it will take me another 20 minutes to figure out what I want to eat!

This particular day, I figured I’d try some Stuffed French Toast which is an unusual item for me to pick from if you know me at all! I even picked it with the sweet toppings of cinnamon cream cheese and field berry compote! I thought it was very odd as well, but I’m glad I did! Even the table beside me had to ask what it was that I ordered! 🙂 It wasn’t overly sweet probably balanced out with the thickness of the bread. It wasn’t all bread either, it as stuffed with the compote, and I drizzle it with syrup! I loved it and I recommend it!

My other half has always loved savoury food, so he ordered himself a Double Triple which from the name is obvious, right? Well, if not, it’s a breakfast consisting of 3 eggs, pork sausage, chicken sausage and bacon! The sausages were really nice, I enjoyed the textures and flavours of it, and of course bacon, there’s nothing better than bacon in this world! I didn’t try his toast, eggs or hashbrowns, but the meat on the plate was wonderful!

Overall, it was a nice sit down place for breakfast! I nice way to kill some time when you’re planning a lazy day! As busy as they are, you don’t feel rushed to get out, but yet your own conscience will tell you to take your conversation elsewhere! The prices are decent, I consider it high, but it’ll always be higher than breakfast at Chinese places. The bill here was just over $35… not good, not bad! But, I left happy and really full, and even got to show off my french toast – so it was wonderful!
