Thai Boat

I’ve been going to Thai Boat in the Northeast Calgary for a few years now – and mostly for their lunch menu – or dinner menu, but lunch sized. The portions are perfect for lunch and they are priced really well.

Thai Boat - Outside

This time I went, I enjoyed Coconut Rice with Red Curry Chicken and normally it comes with Jasmine Rice, but I like my Thai food with coconut rice. My meal came with many pieces of chicken and a huge mountain of rice which was really delicious as it soaked up all the curry sauce.

Thai Boat - Rice & Red Curried Chicken

Thai Boat hasn’t changed at all over the years that we’ve come here. We’ll always go back as it’s my best friends favourite restaurant. I enjoy the consistent quality of food and the great prices. I would classify this restaurant as an “Asian Restaurant” as well, so it’s okay to me that service is a little poor. They usually are in a hurry it seems – when you sit down they quickly ask if you know what you want. When you’re eating, they’ll come by to see if you’re done. If you’re done, they’ll just give you the bill – and this is usually done regardless of how busy or quiet the restaurant is. It is their version of “service” and they mean no harm. So, I will be back soon again!

Sushi Bar Zipang – Calgary, Alberta;

After just over a year of wanting to try Sushi Bar Zipang I finally went! It was great, the fish was fresh and reasonably priced.

The sashimi slices were really thick as well – which made it really good, and justified the price! The location is a little restaurant, and with constant customers – they’ve built a reputation for success here!

I would definitely go back given the opportunity! The restaurant had a dining area and a sushi bar area, and the overall ambiance was very quiet and casual. The service was alright, but the food was just excellent.

I love starting with Gyoza’s, and oddly enough, they don’t have any here! They have quite a large selection of appetizers, but they just didn’t have dumplings — unless of course, I just missed it.

We ordered from the sushi/sashimi sheet, and from there, we selected sushi such as hokki – surf clam,
smoked salmon
and hotate – scallop. All of these were really good as well. We had no complaints at all during the entire time we were at Zipang.

We ordered spicy salmon roll which consisted of salmon, spicy sauce, lettuce and the spiciness was just right, you still get the salmon flavour without the spiciness to overwhelm the entire sushi. It was well balance and one of my favorites for the evening.

Then, we ordered an Alaska roll which was sushi wrapped with smoked salmon, avocado, cream cheese and this wasn’t as flavourful of an Alaska roll as some other places I’ve tried. It seemed to be lacking some flavour, but you definitely got the cream cheese taste. I think they may have put too much cream cheese in.

Just to have a wider selection of sashimi, we ordered their Special Assorted Sashimi and this assortment had salmon, tuna, octopus, and scallops. It was actually really good, and this plate came with 14 pieces of sashimi for $19.50, which is quite a good deal!

And, at the end, we ordered an order of Agedashi Tofu, and it wasn’t really a good deal at all. It was $5.00 for only 2 pieces of tofu, and we all know tofu isn’t expensive. It tasted good, but it wasn’t worth it in my opinion.

Overall, I will be back, I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the sushi, and the sashimi… and that’s all that matters in a Japanese restaurant when we’re out for sushi! 🙂

JoJo’s BBQ – Calgary Food Truck

After watching a lot of Food Network Canada and the new series called Eat St. I’ve been craving food from a food truck! To my excitement, there was one in Calgary that was up and running – and it was the glorious JoJo’s BBQ.

We were there right when they opened, and I could smell their smokiness already from the parking lot closer to Barbeques Galore! I got really excited!

We ordered a Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich and it was really something special! The meat was tender and juicy! We did add extra barbeque sauce into this sandwich and it was really good!! I think it needed more salt or something – otherwise, not bad at all!

We also ordered the Smoked Sliced Brisket Sandwich and that was a sandwich with lots of slices of brisket! The brisket was really tender and smoky! I didn’t add extra barbeque sauce to this sandwich, but none-the-less, still an awesome lunch!

This is a food truck that is worth trying! 🙂 I really enjoyed the experience, and I’m so excited to see it’s a new growing trend!!

Chianti Cafe – Calgary, Alberta

I went to try Chianti Cafe after picking up a good friend from the airport. She wanted to try a good Italian place, and I was here a few years ago, and it seemed to have gone downhill…

We ordered Calamari to share, and it was decent. It was quite crispy and breaded nicely.

I had penne al pacifico – which was basically smoked salmon with sun dried tomatoes on penne pasta. It was an interested texture of smoked salmon and the pasta was less than al dente, as it had quite a bit of crunch in the centre of the pasta. It wasn’t unbearable, but it wasn’t preferred.

We also had a Piatto Combinato Veal medallions with peaches, mangos in a cream sauce served with penne in fresh spinach & tomato sauce. That I heard was quite tasty.

Our last dish that we ordered was the linguini Kitsilano which was Italian sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, tomato sauce with linguini. It was a decent dish.

Overall, I think it was just the texture of the smoked salmon which probably made my dish seem to fail, and made the rest of my dish seem to be a disappointment, especially considering the other 2 entrees were fine. The calamari was really good too, and they only used the body of the squid, so it was all in ring forms. It was deep fried in oil that seemed to be quite dirty, but the overall taste was good.

Fat Kee Noodle House

I’ve been going to Fat Kee for many years now, and I love their fresh noodles that they make for their distributors — they use the same noodles for their customers! You’ll always get their freshest noodles, and many other products.

This place is a little place, and the food is really reasonable, with great quality!! Sure, their specialty noodle dishes maybe a little bit smaller than going somewhere else, but you must remember, they aren’t as expensive! The best thing about smaller portions, you can try more variety!

It is extremely busy here during weekdays in the afternoon, and many evenings as people order takeout. It appears that they have a lot of customers who are return customers, as the waitress seem to really know their guests and their preferences!!

Fat Kee offers quite traditional food as well as North American Chinese food, both really tasty!! Be sure to pick up some of their noodles from T&T! 🙂

We really enjoy their deep fried tofu, it’s actually deep fried tofu, and deep fried again to a crisp. It’s served with some salt on the side for you to dip it in, but it’s actually flavourful enough as is.

We also often order the Spicy Soy Sauce Chicken and rice, and it’s also really delicious. They steam the chicken, and top it with chilies & ginger. The soy sauce that the chicken sits in is really good with rice!! If you just want to eat a bowl of rice with some sauce, this would be the sauce!!!

As always, I eat Shanghai Noodles everywhere I go, so it is no surprise I have it here as well. The noodles as mentioned are really fresh and soft, with the right amount of seasoning and pork. They don’t need to add much to the already perfect noodles!
