Soban – Whitecourt, Alberta

Whitecourt was where we decided to stopover during our little road trip. We got checked in and went out to find some food. We found Soban Restaurant as I had noodle soup in mind — and they would have udon or something! This restaurant was in one of the back streets but not tucked away on that street that offered Korean and Japanese cuisine.

We were the only tables there and we saw a few people do take out meals which was pretty neat as it was quite late and people still order out! We started with Edamame which was a big plate, and pretty good!

We both ordered udon, we got their Shrimp Udon which was actually tempura shrimp with udon and it was pretty good! It came in large bowls and they both started with a salad.

The other bowl of udon we got was their Beef Udon and yes, the picture doesn’t do its justice, but it was actually really good! The beef, they used their Korean Bulgogi beef for it and it worked perfectly!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal! It hit the spot and it was just good!

Diana Restaurant – Drumheller, Alberta

Touring Alberta some more recently and we found ourselves hungry during a late lunch hour in Drumheller. We originally wanted Vietnamese, which was closed, but we found Diana Restaurant right on Centre Street (basically Main Street), so it was easy to find with lots of parking.

We went inside and got seated in a booth and we looked around – couldn’t help but giggle as it was decorated with everything “Asian” and kind of retro actually! This place totally feels like a family restaurant as it appears there was only 1 person taking care of the front of the house and 1 in the back. Service was still really good and the food came out relatively fast. I wasn’t feeling 100% so I wanted something less greasy, so I opted for their Wor Wonton Soup which had quite a few wonton in the bowl — around 12 of them! I’m afraid to talk about the taste as I know I lost some tastebuds from not feeling good! If I had to say something, it would be that it was really quite good!! It just needed a little salt or soy sauce.. or even hot sauce!

My husband loves pork chop and he jumped to the opportunity to have pork chop. It was called Grilled Pork Chops off the menu, and it’s what it sounds like! We were just surprised that it came with 2 giant slices. Of course, I had some to try as well, and it tasted pretty good! Well seasoned, well cooked and it was still tender and juicy.

Overall, we enjoyed our little stop here! It was quite fun and the atmosphere was pretty neat! Not your traditional Chinese food, but as it says outside “Western Chinese”!

Khao San Thai Kitchen

We actually came across this restaurant on Uptown 17th Ave by luck – the place I was wanting to eat didn’t do what we wanted them to… so, we walked around the block and came across Khao San Thai Restaurant and I’m so happy I did!

It was an odd hour for lunch as it was kind of late, but they still had quite a bit of tables out on the patio and inside as well. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was really nice. It smelled a lot like incense inside, but that smell doesn’t bother me at all.

When I finally figured out that I wanted to try their Khao Soi Gai, I ordered it and it came relative quickly! It not only looked amazing, but it tasted really good too! It’s a soup noodle dish with egg noodles, chicken thigh and had coconut milk in the soup.

We also ordered their Red Curry with Beef and the portions was fairly big! It was one of the tastier Thai curries we’ve had, so we were really excited!

Overall, the food was just amazing, the service was friendly and the bill wasn’t too damaging either! We loved it and I’m sure I’ll be back when I’m in the area! I’ve even started recommending this location to people – so hopefully it remains just as amazing!

Horizon Restaurant – Provost, Alberta

We found ourselves passing the small town of Provost, Alberta from our road trip. We decided to stop at this town to fill up on gas and our bellies and stopped at the Horizon Hotel and Restaurant.

Once inside, we noticed that it was Koreans that ran the restaurant, so we thought it was kind of neat. The restaurant is spacious and quite large and offers an lounge on the other side with VLT’s! But, we were here just to eat lunch and that’s what we did!

We started our lunch with some Fried Perogies which of course wasn’t really fresh. It came out rather greasy from the fryer, but yet kind of doughy, but the filling was tasty. Overall, it as decent, but not something I would get again from here.

I tried their special, it was their Hawaiian burger which a burger with a beef patty, some ham slices, cheese, bacon. lettuce and pineapples! It as a large burger and it was a messy one too! It was tasty, but I found it had a little too much teriyaki sauce on it.

The last thing we ordered was their Roast Beef Ramen which was spicy! It was actually really tasty, and reminded us of a modified version of Korean Instant noodles that you can get in a pack. But, the soup base did taste different. We really enjoyed this bowl or ramen!

Overall, this was as great stop! A perfect lunch spot for a lunch that hit the spot!

Momo Sushi – Calgary, AB

I’m not actually too sure how I ended up here at Momo Sushi, but I’m kind of glad we did! It’s a little place located in a strip mall, right across from Chinook Centre, but a little more North on the East side of Macleod Trail.

We weren’t too sure what we wanted, so we basically just started ordering a whack of things and they’re all quite tasty! We started with the Assorted Sashimi which had was a nice selection of sashimi, and quite large pieces as well! We

Then, we ordered Spicy Tuna Roll and Smoked Salmon Roll which they came out on the same plate! I’m sure you can tell which is which, but the spicy tuna is the one on the left. Sure, these rolls are quite typical, but they tasted great!

Lastly, we ordered a Rainbow Roll which we were a little confused about… as the sign they had said there was more to the rainbow roll than what came… but then again – we could be reading it wrong as it was an odd sheet with pictures on what’s in the rolls. Regardless it was a nice selection on the Rainbow Roll and we enjoyed it thourougly!

Overall, I think I wouldn’t mind going back! It sure sounds like they have a great lunch special and their food was good at a good price as well!
