Kilt & Caber Ale House – Calgary, Alberta

Every once in awhile, I have the need for some chicken wings and this time, I found myself on the patio of Kilt & Caber in McKenzie Towne. It’s not a hard location to find at all, and it’s a nice place!

We were seated outside (on a warn evening, of course) and it wasn’t bad! With a newly installed fireplace in the space, it was quite inviting! So, I ordered my drink of choice during this phase, my Virgin Caesar!

From there, we started with wings! We got Salt and Peppered Wings as it was during their wing night! The wings were really good, fried nicely and flavoured fully! Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside… and it wasn’t meatless wings where it’s just skin and bones! So, we were very satisfied! The picture doesn’t show that it looks good, but we often don’t ask for the celery and carrot sticks when it’s a choice! Veggies isn’t something I eat if I have a choice!

I was trying to eat a little meal, so I ordered their Greek Wrap with soup, and it wasn’t a little meal at all! The wrap was made of their naan, stuffed with chicken, lettuce and cucumbers, and topped with their tzatziki sauce! It was a decent wrap, nothing extraordinary, but not bad either! The soup was their soup of the day, Cream of Broccoli and it was pretty good, and it seemed to be perfect for a chillier patio evening!

My husband ordered the strangest looking Sheppard’s Pie which was rectangular! Strangely, he ordered it with a salad as well, so it was just strange. The Sheppard’s pie tasted fine, but it didn’t seem like it was made fresh. It almost seemed like it was just defrosted and a giant bowl of brown gravy was poured on top. At least he ate the entire thing, but everything tastes better with gravy!

Overall, I think this is a great place for wings and drinks. Unless you’re looking for an average meal where nothing really matters, then it’s fine! I really enjoyed the wings, so I’m sure I’ll be back for those! It is an Ale house afterall! I’m not sure what I was thinking!

Village Ice Cream – Calgary, AB

I’ve always loved ice cream and when I heard there’ a great place in town, and it’s opened till late, I was there!! This location can be a tad hard to find and parking is kind of limited right now are there’s road closures do the the flood, but there’s tons of streets for you to park and enjoy Village Ice Cream. There’s no tables or chairs but there’s tons of room outside for you to enjoy your treat outside – or you can purchase it an take it home!

This day, I enjoyed their Toasted Coconut Ice Cream and I love that it tastes like what it says it’s suppose to! It’s not a subtle taste either, it’s awesome! There’s nothing I like more than ice cream with a waffle cone, and I must say – they have one of the best waffle cones ever! I can just buy a pack of their cones and eat it as is as well!

My husband loves minty ice cream, so he knew he wanted their Guide’s Mint right away with the waffle cone! he loved it and said it tasted like mint!

We left feeling so satisfied and we’re so glad this is a place in our knowledge bank for ice cream — opened till late! I’m sure we’ll be back, especially during hot summer nights!

Yogurty’s Froyo – South Calgary

Frozen Yogurt seems seems to be very popular right now, and it’s creeping up everywhere around the city! Recently, Yogurtys Froyo has opened in the southeast end of Calgary – which is the first in the West! This is a chain primarily from Ontario, so it’s an honour to have them here! This location is located just off of High Street close to the Fitness gym, and it’s probably there for a reason!

We walked inside this storefront and was greeted by lots of super friendly staff! You begin by going to the back and picking a size of cup you would like, and filling it with your favourite frozen yogurt! When you got that, you’ll go around the corner to where there is a ton of topping selection. It ranges from candies, to mochies, nuts and syrups! Then, when you’re done, just turn around, get your goodies weighed and enjoy!

My simple creation during this visit consisted of Strawberry, Chocolate and Espresso. I then topped it with some boba with exploding juices in them, fun chips, mochi and some milk chocolate crunch. The frozen yogurt here was smooth and creamy and wasn’t filled with ice crystals. The flavours tasted like what they are suppose to, so it’s a lot of fun here!

We also got a cup for my husband, and his was filled with Green tea and French Vanilla, topped with boba, mochi and chopped peanuts! We love that there are nut toppings to enhance the flavour and texture – but can see potential problems because of the peanuts. I’m glad it’s not a peanut-free location though!

Overall, I know I will be back! I’ve already joined their Loyality program and I have a bad feeling that I will become a VIP before I know it!

Le Petit Mousse – Calgary Farmers Market

I found myself over at Calgary Farmers Market one morning and I was getting hungry, so I decided to make a little stop for a savoury crepe and I found Le Petit Mousse which was a little neat as it was all Asians working there.

I ordered their Merguez Lamb Sausage Crepe which was on what I believe buckwheat crepe which is gluten free. It didn’t leave the nice soft texture of crepes that I’m use to as this one wasn’t too smooth and it left holes in it.

This crepe came with some mustard as well as an odd coleslaw or almost sauerkraut, which I never used. I did like the mustard with the lamb sausages and there was quite a few pieces of the sausage. It was packed with flavour and a hint of spiciness! There was quite a bit of filling, but for $10, I haven’t convinced myself it’s a great deal yet.

Overall, I think I would’ve enjoyed their sweet crepes more due to the texture of the crepe. I’m sure I’ll try it one day! The crepe in general wasn’t too bad, but it wasn’t good either. It was just the lamb sausage that I really liked.

Earls Kitchen and Bar – Shepards Flats

I’ve been trying out restaurant patios lately and I’ve been loving them! I never know whether or not to wear my hat, but that’s another problem! I’ve found myself at Earls in the south by McKenzie Towne just off 130th Avenue and 52nd Street. It’s very new, quite large and full of friendly staff serving delicious food! We had to wait a little bit for a late lunch on the patio and at the front, they actually took our drink orders while we waited!

For the drink, I decided I was going to have their White Peach Lemonade as I was already feeling dehydrated from the nice heat from summer! It was the perfect drink for a hot summers afternoon with the refreshing lemonade flavoured with white peach, fresh lemon and soda!

As this was a late lunch kind of thing, we just settled on a bunch of snacks. We started with a nice bowl of their Earls famous Clam Chowder which was really delicious! It’s no wonder it’s famous! It’s not like the typical full cream ones as this one has tomatoes in it – which makes it taste lighter. The soup was a little separated but it didn’t matter as it was one of the best clam chowders we’ve had!

Then, we ordered a Prawn & Pesto Pizza and this pizza was served on thin crusted that looked like a wood burning oven from the big burnt bubble on the top and the thinness of the crust to ensure it’s cooked to its entirety. The pizza was really tasty, the shrimp was really fresh and of course with the pesto, it was great!

Finally, we ordered some chicken wings! We ordered their Thai Chicken wings and these wings are done really nicely! It’s fried to a perfect crisp on the outside and tender & juicy chicken! Then, it’s tossed in really great sauce! We’ve been back during their wing nights on Wednesdays afterwards as well as we’ve enjoyed it so much. They only come in 3 flavours, hot, hotter and Thai!

Overall, as you can tell, we love this place! We’ve been back already and I’m sure we’ll be back many more times to come!
