Heritage Bakery & Deli – Calgary, Alberta

I really love Ukrainian and Polish food and when I heard about Heritage Bakery & Delicatessen, I knew immediately it was a place I needed to go to! This summer, we spent a few days up North, north of Edmonton to attend Babas and Borsch and other fun Ukrainian events and even visit Glendon, where the largest perogy sits! So, needless to say, when we got back from that type of cuisine, I missed it and had to seek it out – so we came to Heritage Bakery!

This place is like a store and a sit down place combined! I love the idea and I’m glad it works in Calgary! It’s not a huge place, but I want to say it’s big enough! Of course, it would be more fun if it carried even more items for me to gain ideas for, when I cook at home!

But, after we browsed around, we ordered 2 combos an sat down. We ordered their Combo #1 which included Cabbage Roll, 4 Perogies, Hunter’s Stew and Sausage! I really liked this combo as it was like a variety plate where you can sample a lot of items!

The other combo that we ordered was definitely one of my favourites! It was Combo #4 which was Small borscht and perogies! It was great and just what I needed! The perogies and borscht was quite delicious!

I can’t say “we” liked this place, because I don’t care! I LOVED this place and I already think about going back to eat their meat crepes or potato pancakes and their schnitzels! Hopefully that second visit will come around sooner than later!

Dairy Lane Cafe – Calgary, Alberta

My favourite thing to do on weekends is to wake up early and find breakfast! I love breakfast, as normally I have the weirdest breakfast… so, I really enjoy traditional (I guess “American”) breakfast. Lately, I’ve been eating wontons for breakfast which a lot of people think it’s so strange. So, I seek out regular breakfasts when I have the time! This time I find myself wandering in the Northwest part of the city at a place called Dairy Lane Cafe which is a small but popular cafe!

We got seated about 20 minutes after arrival, and that was pretty much as fast as it can get for this location! Once we got seated, I needed a Hot Chocolate… as nice as the outside looked it was still quite breezy! Now that I’ve warmed up some, it will take me another 20 minutes to figure out what I want to eat!

This particular day, I figured I’d try some Stuffed French Toast which is an unusual item for me to pick from if you know me at all! I even picked it with the sweet toppings of cinnamon cream cheese and field berry compote! I thought it was very odd as well, but I’m glad I did! Even the table beside me had to ask what it was that I ordered! 🙂 It wasn’t overly sweet probably balanced out with the thickness of the bread. It wasn’t all bread either, it as stuffed with the compote, and I drizzle it with syrup! I loved it and I recommend it!

My other half has always loved savoury food, so he ordered himself a Double Triple which from the name is obvious, right? Well, if not, it’s a breakfast consisting of 3 eggs, pork sausage, chicken sausage and bacon! The sausages were really nice, I enjoyed the textures and flavours of it, and of course bacon, there’s nothing better than bacon in this world! I didn’t try his toast, eggs or hashbrowns, but the meat on the plate was wonderful!

Overall, it was a nice sit down place for breakfast! I nice way to kill some time when you’re planning a lazy day! As busy as they are, you don’t feel rushed to get out, but yet your own conscience will tell you to take your conversation elsewhere! The prices are decent, I consider it high, but it’ll always be higher than breakfast at Chinese places. The bill here was just over $35… not good, not bad! But, I left happy and really full, and even got to show off my french toast – so it was wonderful!

E & W Family Restaurant – Three Hills, Alberta

For those who don’t actually know me… my name starts with an “E” and my husbands name starts with a “W”… so, when we drove by Three Hills and saw E&W Family Restaurant, we knew it was a place for us to try! This restaurant is located near the edge of the highway, and it’s family owned and ran by Chinese but of course caters to a more “Caucasian” crowd with “Chinese” food.

This restaurant had a dine-in menu as well as a buffet. We just figured we won’t be a pain and order from the menu as there was really good looking food sitting at the buffet – so we opt’ed for that option. The owners felt that they should make us some fresh food to top off the buffet, and they insisted to do so, which was really nice!

I enjoyed many servings and rounds of food. Even though I didn’t have pictures of everything, I know I started with an assortment of food that they did have out! A bit of each and I soon realized I fell in love with their Peppered Chicken, so I had more every time I went back! The owners made more as well, to fill the buffet… so I almost felt the need to finish it all! I failed at that challenge, but it was delicious anyway!

I then went back and forth for a bit, and found that I also really liked their Chow Mein so I had plates of that too! I love buffets as I eat tons of what I find that I like! The only problem here was that there was too much I liked… and it was a long drive home!

Overall, we went here with an empty stomach and left really really full! The owner was telling us about Dry Island Buffalo Jump which wasn’t too far from there, so that’s where we went next! What a neat stop here at Three Hills! I’m sure we’ll be back someday! The owner sold some pet fishes from his tank, and I already mentioned next time I go there, I’ll bring a pet fish home!

Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters – Calgary, Alberta

I was trying to be lazy and just have a nice cup of coffee. We figured we’d try Phil and Sebastian over at Marda Loop… so we drove all the way there for a cup of latte! It was a busy Saturday afternoon, so the wait was lengthy and there weren’t enough tables and chairs as most of the seating was taken up by people on their laptops.

We eventually found a spot near the front, by the window. I think it’s a winter syndrome when everyone’s got their winter gear out and it takes up a lot of room. So, you gotta get cozy in this busy cafe! At least everyone was friendly!

I just ordered a latte, it was pretty dark, but it’s okay! I love that they always do the foam art on top! It makes me think my drink tastes a million times better with it!

Overall, my experience was a positive one! I really enjoyed my latte, the area was awesome, and the people were great! I do like this location over their Chinook Centre location — even though Chinook does have covered parking and a mall!!

Chateau Lacombe Hotel – Edmonton, Alberta

We went for a little road trip and needed to stay over in the Edmonton area, so we booked a room in downtown at Chateau Lacombe Hotel which is just at the river. The hotel was beautiful and the rooms were very spacious.

We stayed in their regular guestrooms with a king bed, and it was really nice. There was a lot of space in the rooms even though the shape of the room was a little skewed.

The bathrooms were your typical hotel bathrooms, so it was nice it was standard and clean.

The room offered nice work space and a big TV so it’s great for any type of travelers that would need a hotel in this area!

This was a great hotel and the dining from either their Lacombe Cafe for breakfast, or the revolving restaurant up on 24th floor offered really delicoius food! We wouldn’t have a problem booking a stay at this hotel again! Click below to see the complete hotel room walk through!
