The Crepe Cafe – Calgary, Alberta

We’ve been looking for the mini crispy eggs in Calgary for a long time. These are quite hard to find, and to my delight, they are available here at the Crepe Cafe.

We went to try The Crepe Cafe when it was quite new, and it was very disorganized, and chaotic. They didn’t plan a good system prior to opening. I’ve recently been back – just to pass by, and it looks like they do have some sort of system, but I didn’t try it… I just walked by. Hopefully it’s better with the Saturday afternoon rush.

Anyway, we went here only for the mini crispy eggs, and when we got it, we were really excited. We sat down on those funny chairs – which clearly was meant to “eat and get out”. The crispy mini eggs were kind of soggy, and it just wasn’t the best batter. However, I can’t complain, as I haven’t found any other ones in town. I’d like to compare it with my experiences in cities with a large Chinese population, but that won’t be fair. All I have to say is.. you gotta try at least one! I do think I will go back in the future in hopes of less chaos, and improved recipe.

The Dessert House – Calgary, Alberta

The Dessert House is one of my favorite places to go in Calgary. There’s quite a few things on the menu that I really enjoy!

One of my favorite things are the deep fried cuttlefish balls. I know, I can make it at home myself, but it’s pretty neat to have such appetizers with a nice bubble tea.

I have a few favorite drinks at the Dessert House. At the end of the year, my favorite drink would be the fresh persimmon drink. It’s really good! It actually just tastes like persimmons blended up!! I love persimmons, and I just eat it as is. I leave the blending to the Dessert House. Another favorite drink of mine would be either the pineapple or lychee green tea (cold) with no jellies or pearls.

I’ve never been a fan of the large tapioca balls or jellies in any of my drinks, but I do appreciate a good bubble tea!

The Dessert House offers an extensive selection of snacks on their menu, from steamed rice crepes to instant noodles! We use to go here for a small dinner, or a late night snack and order lots of delicious treats.

Forbidden City Hot Pot

Forbidden City is a good place to go for good Chinese food. Forbidden City offers hot pot during the winter months, which is about $23/adult, and it is an “All You Can Eat” hot pot. I believe they start offering hot pot from November until the end of April.

We get to go there for dinner and dim sum a lot as my family enjoys the food there. I enjoy the food as well. The service, I think it’s good, but I’ve heard quite a lot of “poor service” stories, and that may be because we’re just familiar customers to them.

Here are some pictures from Hot Pot during the winter:

Forbidden City Dim Sum & Seafood

Dim sum at Forbidden City really is quite excellent. Sure, it costs more than almost all the places in Calgary, but it’s got really good quality dim sum in the city.

The service is alright, they do not use the old fashion steam carts that they push around anymore — probably for safety reasons. Here, they give you a form, and you mark own what you want, and they’ll bring you just that. It’s quite different than traditional dim sum, and the actual food is quite special as well.

Sometimes, I do miss the old fashion style, because.. even if you’re not hungry, and something looks or smells extra delicious, you’d get it. Now, you just eat what you ordered. I guess it’s good if you’re limiting yourself, but it doesn’t allow you to try new things that you wouldn’t have thought of while sitting down and marking your little sheet. Regardless, I really like it here! On weekends, be prepared to wait outside as the lines usually get quite long!

Sun’s BBQ Restaurant – Calgary, Alberta

Chinese food at it’s best! I like going here for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all meals in between! For this particular instance, we went almost as a midnight snack, as we picked up people from the airport on a late flight. Their food is a little greasy, but it makes it look pretty and it tastes good too. It’s not overwhelmed by grease.

There is a wide array of options on the menu, so I’m sure you’ll find something for any appetite. I personally really love the shanghai noodles, but that’s just me and Chinese food. They do an excellent job at making it — but it’s a dish that is relatively simple.

Dinner at Sun Chiu Kee is really good, be sure to check out the dinner review too!
