Brewsters Brewing Company – Airdrie, AB

I love nothing more than sitting on a patio having snacks midday, and on this perfect afternoon, I got to do that at Brewsters Brewing Company out in Airdrie where I did absolutely nothing but enjoy my company and the weather!

The patio was really large and quite comfortable. The service was terrific and the food was really awesome as well. We had some appetizers basically as it was a midday snack that turned into having leftovers for dinner as I couldn’t finish everything. We ordered their Short Rib & Crispy Onion Pizza which was a large “individual” pizza topped with braised short rib, crispy onions, bacon, mozzarella, banana peppers and horseradish aioli. It was as delicious as it sounded!

The other snack we ordered was their Nachos with Braised Short Ribs as it’s obviously that we were in the mood for braised short ribs or something! It was excellent nachos and we got a full order of the corn nachos tortillas topped with a mixture of cheese, tomatoes, olives, peppers with creme fraiche, salsa and sour cream!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. It was the combination of good servers, great atmosphere and delicious food that makes me really like Brewsters chain! I have yet to have a bad experience with any Brewsters locations so I recommend it!

Sammy’s Steak & Pizza – Falher, Alberta

We left Calgary around 5:30AM this one weekend… and I decided to sleep in the car. I woke up every once in awhile to see where we were going, and I only knew “North” was the answer. We passed Edmonton, and kept going. When I finally got up, we were around 750kms North of Calgary, in a town called Falher, AB. Here, we decided I was hungry and found a place to eat. Basically, there was 2 options, both was pizza. We choose Sammy’s Steak & Pizza right on Main Street.

We went inside, and it was pretty cool little place! Definitely a sense of old town and small community as the other restaurant guests that came in basically all knew each other. They’d just sit and have a drink or just social. It was pretty cool to me! The service was great, but the food did come out a little slow. It totally was worth it though!

By the time we figured we would share a pizza for lunch, we ordered the Meat lover’s Pizza which we figured everything was hand made as it took a while and it tasted great! It looked amazing once it came to the table, with perfectly melted cheese and tons of meat!

To our excitement, the slices were thick — with meat!! It was impressive and we gobbled it up in no time!

Overall, this little place had such a wonderful pizza that wasn’t greasy at all! Well, it’s greasy as all pizza is but the crust wasn’t greasy and it made the entire experience really enjoyable! The prices here in general was extremely reasonable!

Pops Pub South – Lethbridge, Alberta

We were in Lethbridge for the first time, just to watch the Air Show and we loved it. After the show, we weren’t too hungry but knew we had to eat dinner as it was a long journey home. We had a recommendation from an acquaintance to try Pops Pub and we just happened to be closest to the South location, so we made it for pizza! This location is conveniently located within some residential area with the hospital about a block away.

Once we got inside, we knew we had to try a pizza as it’s known for their pizzas. We tried their All Meat Pizza which wasn’t too greasy at all! The toppings for this pizza included ham, pepperoni, sausage and Mozzarella cheese! A perfect combo for any meat-lover!

It also happened to be their Perogy Night and with me loving perogies, I ordered a bunch! We actually ordered 2 different types, but they mixed it together – which was fine and an adventure trying to figure out which one we got! The 2 types of perogies offered are potato cheddar and bacon & Romano, and we topped our selection with sour cream and bacon bits. We also had a little bit of lemon pepper on the side which actually added tons of flavour to the perogies – provided you didn’t put tons of it on. Just a little sprinkle is plenty!

Overall, we loved this place! The food and service was great at a great price too! I’m sure we will be back next time we’re in the area – for whatever reason!

Homemade Pizza

I just made a bunch of ham and what I really wanted was a ham pizza. So, instead of going to the grocery store and purchasing a premade crust, I figured I would try my hand at making one.

Ingredients: (makes 1 medium or 2 small)
2 cups of All Purpose Flour
2 cups of water
1 package of yeast (traditional)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar

The first thing you need to do is activate your yeast. I poured my yeast into a little bowl and put 1/4 cup of warm water to dissolve the yeast. Then, I added my teaspoon of sugar. Just leave it for about 10 minutes and it should have expanded and almost doubled in size.

From here, I mix together the flour and salt and the yeast mixture. Then I slowly combine with the rest of the water in stages. I keep mixing until a ball of dough forms. My dough ball here was much more sticky than it probably should have been, but I left it anyway. Just knead it for a few minutes and when you’re ready, let it sit to rise and rest. I put saran wrap on top and left it for about 45 minutes.

After the ball of dough has doubled in size, you can knead it out on a floured surface to the crust shape you like. I didn’t use a pizza tray or anything as I like it kind of rustic, so I just rolled out a thick crust of a random shape on my silicon mat.

After I got my crust ready, I now preheat my oven to 425F and I start decorating my pizza with toppings. I do this rather gently as I’m probably letting it rise again for the second time as I wanted my crust more bread like.

When your pizza is topped with all the goodies you would like, pop it into the oven for about 25 minutes. It comes out delicious, kind of like a pizza bread! 🙂 You could have brushed the crust with butter or oil or even egg wash if you like a prettier crust. I just left mine as is.

Now, after the cooking period, take the pizza out of the oven, and slice it if you want – but you’re ready to enjoy a simple and delicious home made pizza!

Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria – McKenzie Towne Calgary

I’ve always wondered what the empty spaces on High Street in McKenzie Towne would turn out to be as 2 prime locations recently closed for whatever reason. I’m happy to say that a Day Spa has now turned into Famoso Neapolitian Pizzeria which has been a location where I’ve been trying to put on the top of my priority list since it opened. My co-workers can’t stop raving about it, and of course, I went during the coldest days of autumn – and I’m happy to say there was still a line out the door. It was a little cold for me as it was around 8:30PM on a Friday night, so I figured I would go during lunch on the Saturday – which I did! When I entered the pizzeria, we were immediately greeted by friendly staff asking if we’ve dined there before. We said no, and thank goodness we did as you write your order down and go up to the counter to order/pay.

I ordered a Gelato Float as I love floats. I have no idea how you’re suppose to order it as the menu only says “Gelato Float”, but I got my husband to order it, and I got the most disgusting float! I guess my husband wanted just a fountain drink of “Iced Tea”, and he must of gotten confused when ordering my float. I ended up with a Chai Tea Latte Gelato with Iced Tea, which is something I would HIGLHY NOT recommend! hahaha! Usually, I know floats with a sweet fountain drink like Grape or Root Beer with a vanilla ice cream… ah well, there’s always a first for everything!

We ordered an appetizer and a pizza, as this was a lunch – we ordered Prosciutto Wrapped Mozzarella Balls which was a platter with fresh mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto baked in Campania tomato sauce served with flatbread. I just scooped out a mozzarella ball onto my plate and dissected it and covered it with the delicious tomato sauce with a bit of flat bread!

The pizza that we ordered was Abruzzo Pizza which was a pizza topped with Oven-roasted Italian sausage, onion, mushroom, fennel seeds and smoked mozzarella. It was a pizza that said it’s new for the Fall & Winter season, which was a good idea as the combination of the Italian sausage and smoked mozzarella was a such a delicious combination. The pizza crust was really something special! It wasn’t greasy at all, and the texture was amazing! There’s a place in my heart for greasy pizza crusts, but for ones that aren’t too greasy – this is a great alternative!

I love the location, and the environment! The service was excellent, and the food was exceptional! Now that I’ve finally tried the pizza here, my co-workers won’t stop talking about their desserts… so, needless to say, I will be back!
