Fiasco Gelato – Food Truck in Calgary

I love Gelato, and I love our street food – Food Trucks in Calgary! This is one of the few food trucks I’ve made an effort to visit numerous times! 🙂 I think Fiasco Gelato maybe my favourite food truck right now – if I’m allowed to say that. I love the owners behinds the scenes, and I always remember us asking him “how’s it going?” and they replied “living the dream!”

I love it when people are out doing what they love most – and they definitely love what they’re doing! The first time I tried them was actually when Alley Burger started up, and Fiasco Gelato was so clever they came out into the line with their gelato bike to serve hungry and patient customers gelato! Now, that’s smart! 🙂

Fiasco Gelato

During this outing, we enjoyed their Strawberry Gelato which really hit the spot! It was a hot day and a cold cup of refreshing and cold gelato – in my favourite flavour was served, I suddenly was 100 notches LESS grumpy from standing almost 3 hours in line for a burger!

We’ve also visited Fiasco Gelato on another occasion (numerous) where we got to order from their truck – which is just as fun actually!

Fiasco Gelato

One of my favourite flavours over summer that I got to experience would definitely be the Mango Creme Brulee. Fiasco Gelato has been easy to get my hands on as they’re as ambitious to sever Calgarians Gelato as much as I want to eat it! I’ve had them when they were at East Side Village to GlobalFest and all other places in between. I really like following them, and it just cheers me up when I see them serving so happily!

For the colder months when a lot of their customers aren’t thinking about gelato, they’ve Souped Up their food truck – where they now serve hot home made gluten free soups with a fresh and delicious roll. Their soups are just as wonderful as their gelatos, so be sure to try Fiasco Souped Up Food Truck!

U & Me Restaurant in Calgary for Dessert

We made it to U & Me for dessert this one evening after eating up and being dissapointed with their dessert. So, we made a quick stop for a re-do, and it was the best re-do I’ve had in quite some time.

We ordered Deep Fried Crispy Milk 脆皮炸鮮奶 which was really delicious. They deep fried these milk balls to perfection and it was seasoned wonderfully. Of course, it comes with the little plate of sugar for you to dip your little fried balls into. The inside was warm and smooth custard texture and it was really enjoyable. If you want to make Deep Fried Crispy Milk at home, here’s a simple recipe!

One of my favourite dim sum is the Steamed Sweet Cream Buns 香滑奶皇飽 and I’m really happy we ordered it. It was steamed really nice here, and it wasn’t over steamed such that the buns were soggy. The cream inside was really smooth and creamy, sweet and delicious.

Finally, the last dessert we enjoyed was Chilled Mango Pudding 香芒滑布甸 which isn’t too extraordinary, but they did do a good job here. It was quite full of mango flavour – even though it didn’t have chunks of mango it, it did have slices of mango on the side – then everything was drizzled with evaporated milk.

We’ve never had dim sum from U & Me and with food quality like this in the evening, I’m really wanting to come here for dim sum on a weekend morning one day soon! What a great place!! This place is opened daily until 4am, and that’s impressive. It must be the one and only place that has such extended hours!

Scones with Clotted Cream

Cream scones as they call it is apparently a very English treat, and delicious when warm out of the oven. With me going to England once every 10-ish years, I am not exposed to their culture – so it was neat to be introduced to something local. I do know that Princess Diana and Prince Charles had one course at their wedding reception of strawberries and Cornish clotted cream… but clotted cream was only popular in South-West England, so they had to bring it in to London for the occasion.

Regardless of what I know and what I don’t… we got to try some scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream where the ingredients were bought from the store to compromise as we were pressed for time. The clotted cream was light, fluffy – yet dense and kind of tasteless, with a “cream” taste, and a subtle sweetness. It is quite different from a whipped butter cream, since it was much thicker.

Scones with Clotted Cream and Jam

Apparently, clotted cream is used for Cream Tea which we failed to try this trip… so, we gotta try it one day! 🙂 I know making it at home in Calgary will be so different, so I’m not even going to attempt. But, I did get to try ice cream with clotted cream, and I must say – that was the best ice cream ever!

Choklat – Calgary, Alberta

During a stroll down 9th Ave in Inglewood, we ran across this store called Choklat which I was really excited about. I love nothing more than chocolate! 🙂

We stepped inside the store, and the entire store smelled like chocolate, and that gave me a good sugar rush as is and made me more excited. We bought a few treats to try it out and purchased a chocolate cupcake, a chocolate caramel cookie and some chocolate milk

The chocolate from Choklat is quite different, it is smooth, but not velvety smooth – but regardless, it was chocolate! I quite enjoyed the cookie, but I love cookies!! It’s actually more like eating a candy bar than a cookie, which was really confusing for me!

The chocolate cupcake was really neat! It was made into a square cupcake instead of a round one! 🙂 I like that little twist! The batter was much more heavy and dense than some other cupcake places, and I found it to be quite dark! The icing on top was really yummy, but a little “stiff” of icing. As I bit into it, the entire thing came off, instead of making my face full of chocolate mess! I’m not sure which is better… but I guess no mess for the day would be a good idea.

This is a location where I would be back if I was in the area wanting a small treat, but I can’t say I’ll make a special stop for it.

Bliss & Co Cupcakes and Desserts

I had to give Bliss & Co Cupcakes and Desserts a try when my friends, and friends of friends say a place is good! It’s definitely not bad for a dessert/cupcake place with the convenience of a mall location. However, it doesn’t taste nearly as fresh as cupcakes from an actual cupcake bakery… and we have so many of those around the city!! It’s a good place to go if you’re really craving one and you just happen to be at Chinook Centre. The wonderful thing about Bliss is that they are Peanut Free which opens the door to MANY customers!

I found the icing to be hard – which makes me think “old” (sitting out all day)… which is the strangest thing as they seem to sell out of their cupcakes nightly. I love cupcakes and I haven’t been successful at making my own yet, but this one just doesn’t seem to satisfy me to the point of complete satisfaction. However, as mentioned – if I needed to fulfill my craving right then and there, it’ll do just fine! I’ve tried a few flavours in search of a better one, and from the list of strawberry, caramel bliss, after eight and island dream, my favourite would be After Eight as mint chocolate cupcakes is a fail proof combination. I was hoping that Island Dream would rank top, but it was just greasy tasting! 🙁

I do have pictures, somewhere… I’ll post them when I find them! 🙂
